I'm not one to post many things on forums, but this is really starting to p**s me off. If Canada is supposed to be a Democratic country, then why the hell are the Government and the CRTC telling ME what I can and cannot watch??? If this is a Democratic society, then I should be able to VOTE on what I think is allowable to my eyes. Cripes I can't even remember the last time I voted on something, except for the last election ( and I did not vote for that talk out of the side of your mouth pr**k) When the Government tells me what I can or cannot watch simply based on the fact that it doesn't have enough "Canadian Content" - that isn't Democracy - that's F***ing Communism. Did I miss the news conference when the the dumb S**T liberals added a sickle and hammer to their party's emblem????
My ranting is done........hope everyone agrees.

I don't mean to sound negative (or political) but unfortunately we aren't given much choice in the political parties we can vote for ;) I'll use the Liberals since they are in power right now: they promised us that the GST would be abolished (which I never believed anyway) and Shiela Copps even went as far as saying she'd resign if the GST wasn't removed.
Remember how everyone seemed to have forgotten (I wish I did write that letter to her asking why she was still working) until one day a newspaper asked why she still had her job then she resigned? Then a few days later Chretien re-hired her? Gee, I wish I could do that at my job! :)
I think this whole mess with what we watch is just a money issue. It's obious that BEV & *C want to sell us the foreign channels in a nice package for $15.99 extra a month with our digital dish services.
Maybe that's why Shiela Copps is influenced by BEV. They bought out Look TV and it's going away quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if *C dies out next. As for Chretien's in-law who has stocks in Bell (I forget which part of Bell?)... well, all governments have some level of corruption/influence unfortunately.
Sorry if I sound political here (actually, I voted Liberal) but the point I'm trying to make is I'm sure the same thing would happen regardless of which political party is in power. BCE Enterprises is beyond huge and is basically Canada's infrastructure. Look at the amount of power Rogers has! Imagine being able to make all the money from 30 million Canadians' tv sets.
Another issue which just came to mind is rebroadcasting. For instance, I want to get RAI International (Italian TV) which is available on the C band (or is it Ku band?). But there's no way I can get the big dishes for my house. I doubt it will ever be available on BEV or *C because TLN (station in Toronto) shows taped programming from RAI. I'm not sure how right I am here but RAI Canada was supposed to have launched last year (I think) but it never happened. I heard Bell was involved in the launch. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason was because of Canadian content.
Which brings me to my next point: Canadian content. Sure our culture is at stake because of the American influence bla bla insert more hot air from the CRTC bla bla bla but the CRTC commands that there be a certain percentage of Canadian programming on TV and radio. This is something I never understood since we have American channels on cable and satellite (and FTA and radio).
So what we can do is, well, let our government know that we aren't happy. I think the letter writing campaign is a great idea. Also, has anyone written to newspaper editors?

Thats make two of us! I cant see the harm of us watching ESPN and still have access to TSN; or HBO and TMN and so on. The potential for the best tv viewing in the world in going by the wayside just because of some idiotic politicians in Ottawa who will not listen! Well. they can take their inferior Canadian programming and stick it!

Hi ivomec,
Its even worse than telling us what we can watch or not.
Much of what is broadcast is available in Canadian video rental stores and in theaters, so we can watch them. What this is about is just protecting their buddies like BEV who make a killing on forcing Canadians to buy their system instead of the system of their choice. Some of it is about censoring what we can see but some of it is commercially protecting those who donate a lot to the Liberal party and who knows what else like donating $20,000.00 golf games.
Its about REMOVING your freedom to choose, to ENRICH political buddies like BEV and I view that as much worse than just censorship.
Its about how to get RICH by having your Liberal pals interpret LAWS in your favor, all on the back of Canadian consumers whose freedom to choose is then REMOVED.
Where does that stop and when are we called SLAVES for BWANA!! They are not satisfied with the enormous taxes that we pay so they twist a little harder to wring more money out for their friends by passing or misinterpreting laws. Then they get invited to play golf with Tiger Woods by BCE, BEVS owner and they don't even hide that they accept these gifts. And Canadians do nothing about it, day after day.
If you feel USED, its simply because you are. We all are.
And where is the voice of opposition members? They wont say a thing because they want POWER to do the exact same thing.
Remember that in Canada we have some of the finest politicians that money can buyhttp://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif
Its NOT a shame that this happens, its a CRIME but there does not seem to be much that we can do about it. Bribery such as the above is done OPENLY in Canada, should be investigated by the RCMP but nobody seems to give a damn. Playing a golf game with Tiger Woods is estimated to cost more than $20,000.00 so what is that if not a BRIBE.
Frankly I am getting tired of it all. I make these posts day after day but nothing happens.
When Ms. Copps made her inane statement about disregarding the Supreme Court a few letters got written. But not very many. And the ONLY press article on the issue that I know of, is the one I worked for in my local paper here;
http://www.legal-rights.org/hgazette2002.html
But I haven't see a single other one yet this issue SHOULD get Canadians very upset. The REAL problem is that people do nothing much at all and just expect things to happen without effort. But without effort NOTHING MUCH happens.
I, for one, have just about had it. One person or even 50 cannot accomplish much and we have 87,000 members here yet nothing much gets done. Frankly its a little sad.
A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous NEW YEAR to ALL!

Yes all gov'ts have some corruption in them, but we need to look long and hard at our present one and recognize what is really there.
Mr. C and lackies have been in power for too long now and he is sitting on his laurals doing whatever he feels like he wants to. There is absolutely NO accountability for himself or any of the cabinet. This gov't has shown that they are not above taking "shady" gifts to sway there vote on issues, raise campaign money, and provide a voice for the large conglomerate companies to make even more money off the backs of the Canadian taxpayers.
This latest fiasco by Sheila is just one more example of the superior attitude displayed by a corrupt and arrognat gov't who believes that they can do no wrong. If you try to hold them accountable they lie, change the subject, or attack you for daring to point out flaws in an argument. Throughout the later part of this year especially, Mr. C has shown that he truely does not have the best interests of Canadians at heart, only himself. Look at his actions concerning Sept 11, his apparent acceptance of Ms. Copps statement, his disregard of impropriety in the hotel loan...ect. and the list does go on.
Letter writing can help but more action is needed. The best thing to do is to become involved in politics and then your voice truely is heard. Talk to your MP...frequently (but if it's a Liberal one don't expect much action as they will be forcibally removed from the party if they dare not support Mr. C 100%)as they do have many more tools at their disposal than we may have, and the best thing to do is tell everyone you know about what is happening. The more the Canadian public knows about what is happening and the better informed they are the more likely that action will be taken when it is appropriate (like at election time).

Hi King!
You made a good point - BEV forcing people to buy their system........well if Microsoft can be sued for creating a monopoly, what about BEV? HAHAHA - just a thought, of course it will never happen, but the thought of all the chaos it would cause brings a smile to my face. Damn dirty communists........

Lets try to look at this from the Puke's position. They first appeal to SC based on a national interest on Canadian broadcasting system.
Then in Court the Pukes say that if they lose it will be the end of them and the complete Canadian Broadcasting will falter.
The Pukes only started in 1997 and the Canadian Broadcasting has done just fine without them all this time. The Pukes brag and boast about having over one million subs recently.
So where is the problem ?
The Pukes think that they are the Canadian broadcasting or something.
Canadian Cable and DTH broadcasting are all growing.
So what is the national interest ?
Forcing Canadians to watch their system only and their bedtime partners the Government agree.
