According to Hughes Tech support, a receiver update was passed down late December. This breaks the program guide completely if you reset your Hughes E86 and it attempts to download the program guide. This is specific to Hughes E86 IRD ONLY!

No fix is available yet but there should be one "very very very soon" according to the tech. The fix will come as another receiver update and the program guide "should just start working again"

If you have not performed a reboot or disconnected your IRD then DO NOT! You should be ok, it seems to only happen when redownloading the program guide

I have ordered the Hughes E86 mailorder and expect it to be delivered by Friday. Should I keep it out of the data stream until a fix is out?

This is only affecting older E-86 receivers....newer ones are not experiencing any problems.........

UPDATE READ BELOW!!

"Hughes finally is acknowledging that the lost guide problem associated with the 5085 firmware update can't be fixed with a sw patch. They say they will send a replacement today (secured by my credit card -- I'll have 15 days to send the old receiver). Not all of their tech reps have gotten the word, though, so be persistent. I communicated with them via their tech support email at Hughes.com, but had to call 954-597-2080 to arrange the shipping.

Their explanation of the problem is that the early version of the 5085 update did not take on some receivers (not just Hughes-made, but also Sony and RCA). The later patched version fixed the guide problem, but only if it was applied to "virgin" receivers, i.e., one's that did not get the original update. My receiver worked fine for a couple of weeks after the update, but then the guide stopped working properly after a power outage. Hopefully the patched version of the 5085 update will fix the problem, so others won't go through this after a power outage/moving their equipment."

Other receivers other than hughes e86 are having the same problem. It seems they still do not know why the newer units are unaffected. I have a new one on the way and will report back the results

Mxyzptlk, your posts are very informative, thanks. I was wondering if there's a method to clear the EEPROM on the IRD to effectively, "virginise" it, so that it could take the update again and thereby cure the lost guide problem?

Up to this point I have not seen any fix for this problem other than getting a replacement unit

Once you are affected.. you are infected. This may not hold true forever.. just for now

The new Hughes E86 that I put into service 3 weeks ago worked fine up until yesterday. That is when I noticed that ever channel is now listed as To Be Announced and No Description Available. It had run fine and did not experience a power outage since it is plugged into a battery backup. Is this the problem that has been reported on the E86 or something different? What do I need to do? This is a pain in the a$$ not knowing what I am watching and what is the time schedule.

Word is that HNS is working on a software solution to the problem, but it could be months away. In the meantime, swapping the unit is the only way to go but you need to be sure the APG is working if the IRD has the 5085 update. If the unit has the 5046 update (the original), the problem will re-appear if it takes the 5085 update and the re-boot procedure occurs again.

The Mitsubishi HDTV/DTV IRD does the same thing. The Mitsu uses Hughes software. The only guide I get is my local channel guide.

I have read on several forms that an update to fix this problem was suppose to be sent already.

I have read that it will now be a week or so until it is sent down

I have also read that the update might not be coming for awhile.

But the good news is it seems to be realized by Hughes/tosh/Mits and hopefully something will come down soon.

Until then do not unplug anything if you can help it. Apparently some units work and others crash miserably.

It is most certainly a quality assurance test case that never got tested.

Hughes makes the Toshiba DST3000 (and some others) so I believe the thread about "Problems with DST3000" is the same loss of program
guide problems. It's related to Directv updates 5085 and 5086.
