FOX Sports and Thomson multimedia's RCA Brand to Present Super Bowl XXXVI In FOX WIDESCREEN
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2002--Thomson multimedia (NYSE:TMS - news)
Digital TV Viewers to Experience Every Angle,
Replay and Graphic In 16:9 Format for First Time Ever
Almost 50 years ago, 20th Century Fox introduced Cinemascope(TM), the first widescreen film format, and it revolutionized the motion picture industry. On Sunday, Feb. 3, history repeats itself.
FOX Sports will televise Super Bowl XXXVI, certain to be the most-watched television program of the year, in a new 16:9 digital format dubbed FOX WIDESCREEN(TM). RCA, a brand of Thomson multimedia (NYSE:TMS - news), will become the presenting sponsor of FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) from pre-game show to sign-off. The announcement was made today by David Hill, Chairman, Fox Sports Networks and Mike O'Hara, Executive Vice President of Consumer Products Marketing & Sales for Thomson.
The FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) system enables digital television viewers, for the very first time, to enjoy a true Super Bowl telecast, from pre-game to post-game, in a clarity like never before. Previous digital Super Bowl telecasts have only shown the game itself, with the signal originating from a separate production unit. The result was that the digital viewer experienced only a fraction of the production values enjoyed by the traditional analog viewer.
``A great deal of thought goes into every camera we use and replay we run,'' said Hill. ``FOX WIDESCREEN(TM), for the first time, will let fans with digital televisions enjoy a game the magnitude of the Super Bowl in digital clarity and from every angle we've got.''
``We're delighted Thomson and RCA have joined with FOX Sports to enable Super Bowl XXXVI from New Orleans to be seen in the new, crystal clear FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) 480p format,'' added O'Hara. ``On Super Bowl Sunday, fans with digital televisions deserve to see the big game with all the production values that FOX Sports is renowned for, and we're proud to help make that happen as the exclusive presenting sponsor of FOX WIDESCREEN(TM).''
The FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) picture is twice as sharp as that generated by most DVDs, and four times clearer than traditional analog television. Previous efforts to accommodate digital television users viewing NFL broadcasts resulted in side-by-side productions utilizing a fraction of the televising network's production capabilities.
Thomson's professional broadcast equipment is being utilized for production of both the analog and digital broadcasts of Super Bowl XXXVI on FOX, including a dozen Thomson Broadcast cameras, several of which are digital super slow motion units. The FOX WIDESCREEN(TM) broadcast will be available in over 41% of US households serviced by 18 FOX owned-and-operated stations and affiliates. Receiving a digital signal is simplicity itself. Football fans need only purchase a digital TV receiver, connect it to their rooftop antenna and digital TV, sit back and enjoy the game.
