View Full Version : Word has it that the feds are in town

I have heard from a few people that the investigators have been visiting people in my area. I have a little concern about this. I do not know if the people that have been rumored to be visited have received the "letters" or not. Could one expect to recieve a visit without first receiving a letter? Or is am I letting my mind wander to far into this?

ok just to add to the hysteria...

What town are you in?
and how did you find out if the feds are in town? did they call ahead to make an appointment? or did a friend call you and say that they came to his house and yours was next on their list.

If they are visiting individuals and not dealers I would be really interested in under what evidence/reasoning they used to get a search warrant to go into peoples homes.

personally i am doubting the validity of this post in general. but i do reserve the right to apologize at a later date should I be proven wrong.

I don't think that it would be a good idea to post the town, but I will say that I am in the Central midwest. The person that I was talking to about this said that it was an electronics dealer that recieved the visit. I have also heard of others getting caught, but I do not know them, nor care to find out more information about them. I wish to stay as far away from it as possible. I didn't get much info, about it because my buddy didn't know much info about it only that investigators showed up at the business. I did not state that I was told I was next on the list......just was curious if a person could be a target without recieving a letter from the evil machine. I never stated that they were visiting individuals either.....

Please don't take my original post as a stir/scare post. I was merely wanting to find out if it was possible to be visited (like I heard was going on) without getting the so called "letter" as a precursor. (Basically I have not recieved any letter from DTV and want to put my paranoia to rest from all the rumors running rampant right now.)

Just a friendly reminder for all....

If the government, Fed or state, knocks on your door and ask to come in make sure you ask if they have a SEARCH WARRANT.

If they don't make sure you DO NOT CONSENT to let them into your home.

That's the biggest mistake anybody can make by CONSENTING to let the government into your home without a SEARCH WARRANT.

Other then that let's watch TV :)

They have to read you your rights also

Minor correction is that the government will only read you your rights if they are going to arrest you. They will not read you your rights if they have a search warrant. Also, the government will not read you your rights if they are trying to get you to CONSENT to a search.

They'll say something like "Do you mine if we come in and look around?"

Make sure you DO NOT CONSENT!!!

:)

Well... I would check that again but in Canada they do have to read you rights and your right to remain silent. While a search and seizure is going on you are under arrest in Canada.

Also if they have a search warrant they do not need you consent.. I believe that has to apply to the US also

Gunsmoke2...I can assure you from an academic point of view that in the US they don't have to read your rights (Miranda) if they (the government) have a search warrant to search your home. Only if the government ARREST you will they have to read you your rights in the US.

As for my comment about CONSENT. I meant to say that never consent to the government searching your home if the government DOES NOT have a search warrant. But you are right that your consent is not needed if the government shows up at your doorsteps with a valid search warrant.

FTM: Sounds like a good idea regarding channel 596 :)

They really do need to unwind :gg

I know for a fact that police really do not need a search warrant if you are suspected of a crime here in canada. I don't know if that also holds true for RCMP.

GS2:

Miranda revisted was funny :D

You are right about the US watering down Miranda. Ohh well I guess you just have to be smart and DON"T GET CAUGHT or learn how to outrun your partner in crime:gg

I think the rights thing depends on circumstances. Had the unfortunate experience of having Feds at my home & place of business with search warrants.Separate physical locations. They read me my rights at home before beginning search, but at the business they just dug in and tried to pump employees for info with no notification of the right to keep silent. No one was arrested then or since(3 years gone by). Had nothing to do with cards by the way. I asked if I was under arrest at the time of the search & they insisted I wasn't.
Makes for exciting times and sleepless nights to say the least. Needless to say I have some real good feelings for these Aholes.

In Canada they are suppose to read your rights to employees if they are going to ask questions. Employees are intitled to remain silent. Employees should also be allowed to contact their lawyer or the company lawyer during a execution of a warrant.

Guy's,
It's very hard to get a search warrant, and this is a civil suit,
not a criminal act for the end user. I don't ever think, they will
raid your home, unless you are doing card's, and someone turns you
in. The big boy's that make a few buck's on this hobby, just beware!

The rights will be clearly defined when you are: charged, arrested, cited, or detained by any US law enforcement agency. Now whether that actually happens is another story. Before a search can be conducted when you are present, it must be clearly stated as to what the intent of the search is for. IE... suspected drug trafficing or providing safe haven to illegal immigrants (whatever). Even in the military search for contraband had to be done in a systemic procedure. Otherwise, the evidence gathered would be valueless (invalid/inadmissable).
