Is there a problem mounting a dish on the side of a house with vinyl siding. If so, what is the problem ( Static? Stability? ), and/or how can the problem be avoided or cured?

There shouldn't be any problem. Any additional static (if any at all) that may accumulate will be discharged through the grounding block before entering the house.
Static is generated by wind blowing past the antenna, it's much worse in the winter (dry air & more wind)and desert areas.
Don't worry too much about lightning, if you get hit, it'll pretty much blow everything into little tiny charred chunks. ...and there's nothing you can do about it, short of disconnecting everything.
Good Luck

To start with you should mount it to the facia board or your siding wont expand and contract and will buckle, the higher the better, in case you need to remove it later its also easier to hide the holes if its in the facia.

Good point smoker. I guess that's why they don't let me on the "Siding Installer" forums.....
The dish shouldn't be mounted too high though, the line of sight has to clear the eaves, figure an elevation angle about three degrees higher than the elevation setting on the dish.
My apologies to Deltagr8, I hope I didn't steer him into doing a bad thing.

Thanks Smack, Smoker and Scoop for the help. I ended up taking the dish off of the siding anyway because it didn't clear my neighbour's house by enough. I ended up mounting the dish on the roof in a semi-secluded spot. The dish mounted VERY securely and I get a signal in the mid 90's.
Thanks again,
Steve
