Muggles -

A friend of mine, who is an engineer for two T.V. stations and a local radio station here is under the impression, (note: I said imperession) that XM can be hacked. Apparently the authentication is done by a socketed IC, which can be copied and placed in another radio. Fact or fiction, I do not know. Have you heard differently since your last post?

I sure would like one of those babys but before I go out and buy and then try to hack I want to be sure they will stay in business. I am not sure how many people are going to go to the expense plus the monthly fee to sign up.

I agree. The monthly fee is not really unreasonable though for what is offered, IMHO. But, the radio is a lot of $$, and you're right, who wants to spend a ton of $$ if they will be gone.

Sears? You have GOT to be kidding! Great, now we can listen to music while we watch the radio scroll messages about a white sale.

Competition is good, but, SEARS?

I have listened to a little of it.
I did not see much difference between it and a regular radio station. It still has comercials just like a regular radio station, its just that you can listen to one kind of music all the time on a selected station. ex.,heavy rock, classical, country, and so on.
Didnt quite seem all that special IMHO.

If it can be built it can be hacked or reversed engineered!!! Build a better mouse trap and a mouse can beat it.

The difference is, NO fade out spots, and you can listen to the same station all over the USA.

Yep, as I remember pay TV started because people were willing to pay for no commercial TV. This evolved into DTV. Well where are we now? Pay TV with commercials...XM radio...should be hacked, bad idea, mostly truckers will sub...LOL..Who needs it?

Confucius prediction...They will be gone, soon...They just filed with the SEC, they need more capital.

What about going under a bridge, or trees. If it won't receive in your garage, ie Line Of Sight, I would expect these to affect it.

Any new info on hacking these bad boys?

It works in my dad's garage!!! Very suprising. It also works inside of my camper(Must be the thin roof). It may get a blackout here or there while going under bridges an such, but not that big a deal.
It is only 10$ a month and worth EVERY penny!!! There are some commercials, but FAR less than on regular FM. It would be nice to clone service to a second radio, but I definently wouldn't want to hose them out of their subscription fee....they need $ to stay in buisiness. It's only 10$ anyway. Take it from me, I have no affiliation with XM at all, if you had it for a week you couldn't live without it!!!! (Much like how I feel about my TIVO)!!!
All in my Opinion!!!

I've seen the hack info on XM and unless you're very very good at soldering I wouldn't even consider it.
Basically it boils down to pulling the chip off a subbed unit reading it and then pulling the chip off a second unit erasing it and rewriting it------so you still need a subbed unit to clone the hack unit from and it calls for removing and reinstalling the chips from both-----pretty risky for something that's so cheap to begin with.

To read and write the tsop chip, you can place it in a normal Echostar IRD and use a JTAG to do it...

I'll try to find on my computer the schematics of the XM radio board and place it here for all to see.
