I was discussing this whole issue with our rights and freedoms with some people and its hard to believe how "ill informed" most of the general public are. When i told them that basically we are force fed the programming we recieve in Canada and the CRTC makes the decisions for us they were irate.
I told them this has been going on for years and is really a communist idea(which it is).
Basically we are being treated just like eastern bloc countries used to be treated. Our government (crtc) is saying we don't think our populace should decide what they wish to watch so we will make the choice for them. This is utter communist crap. In a free country how does the government have any right to decide how i watch tv.
We need to let normal "joe blow" canadians know how outrageous this is and finally get the ball rolling on changing the crtc and government.

In fact I was thinking just this morning about how we all been "BEV Bashing" lately. Really their programming selection is not entirely their fault. They are dictated to by the CRTC as to what they can and cannot provide on their satellite service. So it is the CRTC and the Canadian government that must be changed to allow more freedom in programming choice.

You have a point, chubba, but rather than try to change the canadian content rule (which would allow DirecTV and Dish to apply for broadcasting licenses), Bell would rather make it almost impossible to choose anything other than.... you guessed it, BELL! Bell executive: "who cares if the content sucks? they won't have anything else to choose from and we'll all be rolling in dough! MUAHAHAHAHAH!!!!" (ok the evil laugh might not have happened but you get my drift :) ). Rather than prove that they could compete successfully in a more open market, Bell would rather try for the monopoly/duopoly and leave canadians no choice at all.

Yes, points well taken...

Remember that DirecTV DID apply for a license to operate in Canada back in 1996 or 1997, forget exactly. They got so pissed off at the CANCON regulations of the CRTC that they abandoned their Canadian plans and left. So to hold Bell ExpressVu entirely responsible is unfair. You are right about the 'monopoly/duopoly' part though. Bell has always had the word "monopolize" somewhere in their Mission Statement.

Don't fight CRTC. Fight who controls it! That is Government of the day. In this case it is the Liberals. The key players (Sheila and Alan) are posturing for Leadership of the party post Chretian era and have ambitions to be the choice for the next Prime Minister of Canada.

However, satellite fighters need to stay focussed and not go shot gun every which way.

Just my 2 cents!
