With all of the trouble that seems to be popping up everywhere regarding Dtv's threats and lawsuits, it still amazes me that people will buy from any dealer. You can find plans to make most anything you want on the net. It takes a little time but can be done with a little reading and practice. When I joined this hobby, the big draw was "they only go after programmed card dealers, they have never gone after an end user." It looks like those days are over.

I ordered a programmer a couple of years ago, now I'm paranoid to the point of checking the dealers website everyday to see if they are still operating. I wish they would step down gracefully as Acid Labs did to prevent any backlash to their customers. But I guess the wheels of capitalism still turn, and unfortunately buyers may get crushed under those wheels. It amazes me that any dealer is still in business.

If you haven't ordered in the past, educate yourself and build your own equipment. It will give you a lot of peace of mind that many of us have lost.

And a note to dealers who read these boards, protect your customer information. Better yet, destroy customer information after the product is received.

Yes I thought the same as you did 2-3 years ago. I tried to order a programmer from canada and got burned the guy never got back to me kept my money. Then I decieded to order from one of a dealers selling in the US and was happy with there service I read on there web site that is was not illeagel to buy a programmer as long as I didn't use it for hacking, so I thought it was ok to buy one. I considered it to be the same as a computer modem. Got a letter 2 weeks ago. :(

Hi JD490,

Nothing has changed and programmers for smart cards are still NOT ILLEGAL. If you use it to steal TV then that USE is illegal but the product itself is NOT. See:

http://www.legal-rights.org/sc-programmers.html

However if DirecTV® bamboozle people into believing that mere POSSESSION is illegal under civil law (it is NOT) then they are bamboozled and will just have to pay the price of the "Extortion."

But checking with a lawyer will quickly show that the product is NOT contraband or illegal itself and it is only the USAGE that is or is not illegal.

But what does that change. Most people unfortunately will let these giant corporations extort them and they just shut up and pay the man. Why beats me since any lawyer will tell you that

(a) the product itself is not illegal and

(b) that the purchase invoice that DirecTV® may have is not proof of ANYTHING and does not point to any guilt by itself.

If there are other mitigating circumstances such as the cancellation of a subscription for your Dad and for YOU during the month following purchase, then that may shed a different light onto it. It still is not proof but it does go a long way towards showing that you PROBABLY did something.

Add to that an E-mail that they have that you sent the dealer saying " hey this thing programs those DirecTV® card perfectly" well then you are COOKED. But failing that sort of thing, what they have is no evidence of a crime that will stand in any court in America. What YOU do with their accusing letter then depends on YOU entirely.http://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif

But unfortunately, most people take the short term view and settle no matter what the future consequences may be. And they COULD be bad if any admissions of theft are made. And you cannot defend against a criminal case if you made a clear admission in a civil suit.

I will BET anyone that we will see criminal cases files in the future because of admissions made in the civil matters. But not until they have plucked every single grape off the vine.

Call me paranoid but this is what i have always done. Am i and a few friends the only ones that does it?

I only buy from places that take a postal money order ( because you can send it with no name on it).
I never use my real name on any part of the order.
Only thing that is correct is the mailing address. If you get a letter then you send it back because no one with that name lives at this address. I and several friends have bought this way since messing with this stuff since '95.

Just and idea for some of you in the future ( i know it's to late for some now).
