Many people have recieved those kind of letters. You see this pop up in many of the other forums/websites. Wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just dump the letter and keep your stuff off location if possible. Play it safe and if you are subscriber than don't worry. If you aren't I still wouldn't worry because they always say they have substatial proof but if they really did than you would have been raided by now. They are probably calling a bluff, but it seems someone may have tipped them off to your activities. Beware of those around you, you may have a jackass in your midst and you aren't even aware of it. In the mean time it maybe be a good idea to clean up and if there is anyone who is aware of your activities, tell them you have given up the hobby.
Good Luck Mate!!

read this on another forum :
Lately I have been hearing about an increasing number of letters being sent to US residents regarding impending lawsuits from Directv. These letters are a result of alledged purchases made by so-called 'testers' from companies that have been successfully raided and shut down by Directv. Companies like WhiteViper and Vector Technologies have both provided their customer lists to Directv, resulting in the latest wave of legal threat letters against former customers of these companies.
Generally these letters are on a Directv law firm letterhead. They ask for $3500 in compensation and offer to drop the pending suit if this sum is paid by a certain date. What strikes me as unusual and naive are the unthoughtful knee-jerk reactions to these letters shown by many of the recipients. Let me make this very clear, if you get any sort of threatening letter in the mail accusing you of any sort of wrongdoing, never call the number and discuss settlement. The lawyer on the other end is likely a smooth talking professional that can and will hold anything you say to them against you in future proceedings. However, without you communicating with them they ultimately have no case.
What you should do when faced with such a legal threat is to contact attorney Al Zakarin of Florida at 813-251-2200 or e-mail him at zakarian@tampabay.rr.com. Mr. Zakarin is totally familiar with these letters and how to properly defend against them.
I would also recommend reading this thread as there are many interesting points made, especially by member runninrebel who has a number of very thoughtful posts that are a must-read for anybody that has recieved the letter.
The bottom line is, this Directv threat letter gives you enough rope to hang yourself, don't be stupid and do it. Remember that it is an achievement for Directv to be even able to prove that you paid for and took delivery of a so-called 'theft device', let alone attempt to prove that you used it to illegally access Directv satellite programming and and not for one of the other hundred legal uses for these devices. This is fear mongering at its finest, remember that the law firm representing Directv and responsible for this letter writing and distribution campaign is no more than a glorified collection agency. When properly defended, Directv has no hope of winning any of these thousands of cases. Once they lose a few it is game over and back to the drawing board for Dave.

A CFO would not send such a letter. In additon, A CFO would not be in the reply address. Direct TV doesn't sue people, their legal representatives do.
Another misguided post for the BS thread.

This post is not misguided. I'll be glad to email you a copy.
Nothing was said about a CFO. You need to re- read the post.

butchs18,
I too have received such a letter on a letterhead from Secure Signals International. (An affilliate of McGinnis Group International. LLC.)
It is regarding DirecTV vs. ME
in violation of 47 U.S.C. sec 553 & 605 et seq.("Communications Act")
and 17 U.S.C. sec. 1201 et seq. ("Digital Millennium Copyright Act")
Same signed name at bottom.
President & CEO
The letterhead that I have has a Memphis, TN address.
In bold black lettering it says "You are hereby formally notified to immediately cease and desist in these illegal practices in violation of the right to DirecTV and in violation of Federal Law."
It also says to contact them in order to resolve this matter without the intervention of the courts within ten (10) days.
Oh and it also says "Kindly take due notice," Then the signature.
