I've got until 9/18 5pm. I'm still trying to look at all my options but don't want to miss the deadline. Can a lawyer be contacted the final day and negotiate the settlement (I plan on letting one from the legal-rights.org page handle it)? Do I need to act even sooner?

they will follow up with a second letter. The firt letter does not really matter. what happens after the second is a bit unknown. Some people say you will be sued if you ignore the second. I retained an attorney for piece of mind. You will find until you retain one it will be on your mind alot. after you will not think about it that much.
Bottom line you will be hard pressed to find the exact answer as to what will happen.
most common senerio.
first letter ignored because it is pretty gay.
second letter people get a bit scared retain an atouney.
DTV's lawyers want $3500 (usually) then you pay or tell them to go to hell.
if you tell them to go to hell then ???????? I know people at this phase that have not been sued yet.
you will hear people will input but most are not past this point yet. I am not awar of anyone that retained an attourney and contacted them that has been sued. It is my understanding that the suits are from people that totally ignored the letters. this info could be a bit off because obviously you don't know everone's exact situation.
I have been told that if you can hands down prove you used this for legal means there is a way out. That is what my lawer told me. I am waiting to hear what they have on me so to speak. then I will counter with my lie most likely. just have to be carful here cause if you fight you will have to testify to it.
I personally don't belive in the if you guilty then pay attitute I see here. There are plenty of guilty people that win in court. smart criminals find a way out.

I want to get this whole situation behind me before even dealing with a second letter. I have no intentions or desires to see them at court. I've never been one to deal with pressure well. I'm pretty sure I'm at a no-win situation considering the fact that settlement would probably cost less than fighting in court.
I'd still like to know how long negotiations take. Hopefully someone who has settled or knows someone who did can fill in. I'd like all the details like paperwork, payment options (if they exist), time the process took, etc.
