Enforce satellite dish laws: Cable
By SARAH GREEN, TORONTO SUN
The head of the Canadian Cable Television Association is ordering a Sopranos-style hit against illegal satellite dealers.
Janet Yale, president of the association, said there needs to be an "aggressive, coordinated campaign" to crack down on dealers peddling illegal satellites -- now in an estimated 700,000 homes across the country.
"You can't compete with free," Yale told the Broadcast Executive Society yesterday in Toronto.
"The bottom line is simple: The government has to enforce its own laws and it has to do it now."
The Supreme Court ruled last April that unlicensed providers selling decoders for foreign-based satellite signals are breaking federal broadcasting laws.
But there has been no push to boost resources to the RCMP or to increase penalties to illegal dealers.
