Well here is the story. A good friend of mine lives in Central America, he purchased an unlooper, ( I forget the company). And got the famous letter...something about 3.5k...I am sure its the same as the ones reported on already...but i can post it if guys want..although he has yet to email me the letter.
The deal is that he forwards his US mail thru a currier services (po box) in flordia which redirects it to his home. So he was troubled when it reached his house.
Instead of comming here to post, or asking me or any other fellow hobbist he did the unthinkable....and called the phone number in the letter. He argued with the guy on the line, that he had done nothing illegal ect ect, and if he boaught a gun does that mean hes guilty of killing someome ect ect...the other end would just say.."you need to get a lawyer.." He used a public phone, but remember we are talking about 3rd world country I don't know whether they could have traced it or whatever..
So now what should he do? I would have told him not to call, and cancel the PO and get service through some other company...but he called, does that hurt him? Is he untouchable being that he lives in Central America and is not a US citizen? Other than canceling the PO (which he did already) is there anything else he should do...
Thanks

so is he a citizen of the US?
does he own poperty or have funds in US banks?
if NO then i would doubt that he will ever be taken to court... his letter should simply state that he does not live in the US anymore or ever and that his mail is just forwarded through that p.o. box. i seriously doubt that it would be worth their time/effort to extort 3500 from him.
sample letter:
Dear lawyer scum,
I live in south america. please feel free to come and visit the weather is wonderful and so are the beaches. I have my mail forwarded through that P.O. box in florida. I have never violated any US Laws that you are referring to cause heck I dont live in the US.
Thanks,

HOWEVER if he has property/money in the US they might go after him still or if he is a US citizen living abroad.
if he lives in South america why is he buying dtv equipment? i dont think that the sat footprint is that big(except for northern mexico) so my guess is that he lives at least parttime or did live in the US... and possibly does have property in the US...
also if its panama ..isnt that a US territory? thus US laws apply?
of course like the others said consult a lawyer.

Hi Phoztech,
Did you know that with a slightly bigger dish that the DirecTV™ signal is well received even in Columbia and Venezuela. So its no probalem to receive it there at all. All you need is a good 6 foot dish or even better a spun 8 foot dish. With that and a very low temperature LNB the picture is clear as a bell down there.
There are LOTS of specialty mount and LNB's that use your old C-band dish too so there is lots of ways to get a good signal even further south.http://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif
And NO Panama is not a US protectorate or anything where any US law applies.

was totally unaware that the satellite signal would go that far south... i thought i had seen sat footprints that were much smaller.
What do you think of this guys legal situation though? would you agree that it is unlikely that they will persue him?
and thanks for the info on panama i was unsure of this but was trying to remember if they were cause of the canal or something...anyway i guess that info is in a history book somewhere.

In many countries in south america, loaders are use or were used to test galaxy dtv, a franchise of Dave. the problem is that in many of this countries there is no law regarding the decoding of signals that reach your home without you requesting it. so it has not been tested as an ilegal activity.....

I just spoke to sandino about this matter and he told me his friend does not live in the US, neither is a US Citizen nor has a residence. He does not have a banking account in the US and he only comes to the US when he wants to go to Orlando (Disney) with his family.
He just have this po box in the US and there is where he did receive the leeter and any item he bought in the past.
