P4 Hacked? You be the judge! posted by Blackie on 10/27/02

I was recently shown some insider docs that were released supposedly by DirecTV and break every agreement between DirecTV™ and NDS. It seems that NDS is not always the guilty party when it comes to breaches and it is possible that the break in the P3 card (TI 370) was entirely the fault of DirecTV™ if these documents are accurate. Complete requirements for the P2, P3 and P4 cards are part of these documents including what chip the P4 is and how its made with 2 ASICS and much more. It is interesting how DirecTV™ have specified that the P4 include such things as that it should "have M and D cards (phase 4.1) as in the P3, that it should have clock glitch immunity, minimal power analysis suggestibility, a "counter measure mode" using DirecTV™ defined security which would inhibit unauthorized viewing and enforce secure IPPV auditing."
It should support an in-field operational life of 8 years. Impressive. What is more impressive is that it should support and adjust for the expiration month rollover that will occur in (hear this) 2013 and continue to support expiration months through 2020.
I think we have some great expectations for this P4 card. Of course it will support much more which I wont mention HERE YET! But there is MUCH more ready to ROLL.
This new card will support chaining from the P2 and P3. You know the old push it in, pull it out deal that we need a bunch of channels to describe. The chip should not be able to be emulated by a gate array nor should it be able to be emulated on a 2 gig Pentium P4 computer.
What is really interesting is that both DirecTV™ and NDS will have specific access to parts of the Chip on the card. One can make whatever assumptions this would lead to but NDS ARE NOT GONE, IT SEEMS.
One of the more interesting specs will be the card records the number of card insertions since last callback counted and this shall be a part of a diagnostic capability that includes "hack attempts" and info that can be sent back on every callback via the diagnostics.
Because much of the P3 is incorporated into the P4 (even though it is no longer the TI chip) There has been an ongoing dispute between DirecTV™ and NDS with NDS having refused to release certain "signing tools" needed for some ECM's on P3 and the "Key set" for the P4. It seems these 2 entities do not trust each other at all, with good reason I think.
****I Didn't write this,so don't even think about it;) HitMe****
