The word alot is very frequently used instead of a lot. There is no such word as alot.
Must we bastardize the English Language?

definition of "word" = something spoken/written.

Well I find it much more likely that people believe alot to be the correct way to write a lot.
And just because someone chooses to misuse the English language does not mean that it is correct.

There is only one problem with this statment. You are not able to start a sentance with the word "and" :eek:

Actually, starting a sentence with "and" is acceptable just frowned upon by scholars. alot is "a lot" just like gonna is "going to" but both are as acceptable as ebonics...which makes them unnacceptable I guess :D

well, in me ole spellchecker and Thesaurus.. alot is a word...

lots

masses
loads
heaps
so,, we can allot this alot thread alot... ?

alot = Allotment
real word and an acronym also
ALOT Adaptive Large Optics Technologies
ALOT Airborne Lightweight Optical Tracking
Additionally the words a lot beginnings are actually slang in nature and is short for the root word allotment.
Lazy is as lazy does....You say alot is not a word. I say fine then dont use a lot neither ;)
