Any responsible adult can sign for a certified letter. The signature simply relieves the post office from liability that the contents may have been lost through its own negligence or accident during processing from the sender to the recipient's address. What happens subsequent to delivery is between the sender and the intended recipient. Legally, the signature is accepted by courts of documented evidence that a "reasonable attempt" was made to deliver the contents to the intended recipient.

A certified letter means nothing. Just a demand letter. If
dave was really after you, and wanted to use the demand letter
in court. The only way this could be use aganist you. If it
was sent certified, " Restricted Delivery " and only you are
allowed to sign for it.
