View Full Version : DNS entries for pirate sites gone?

I had a tough time getting here today. My browser could not resolve the IP address of any Pirate domain. Ping didn't work either.
I ended up getting an account at an off shore anonymizer server. And sure enough, I can get here.
Could DTV have forced the root level DNS servers to pull the entries for the pirate sites? That would be quite a good attack on the community. There is a scenario where they could get the court to tell all DNS servers in the US to no longer resolve pirate domains. Even though they can't shut down the non-USA servers, they could keep people from getting there. If DTV pulled that off, I'll have to tip my hat to them. (Those scurvey dogs!!!)
And, interestingly enough, there seems to be a new hash in the stream. Off course they would want to force the community to try to get to the servers.
I sure will look stupid if there is another explaination, but all the facts I can get seem to be consistant with this theory.

Hmmmmm maybe a router down in your path? There doesn't seem to be a problem; I came in via my usual route . . . .
I don't know if DTV wields the kind of clout it would take to do what you describe . . .

Working good on this end too....wouldn't it be VERY illegal for DTV to try that anyways?

Weird but I had the same problem. Switched to off shore and all is well..
Strange that it happened about the time of ECM:K

Yes, I thought that was strange. But I absolutely do think DTV has the clout. If they could demonstrate to the court that the primary purpose of various web sites is piracy of thier signal, I don't doubt they could get an order that those names get removed from the root level DNS servers.
And interestingly enough... You can still get to www.hackhu.com and such very easily... Those don't have to be removed fron the DNS servers for obvious reasons.
Maybe I'm doing a Chicken Little here. But this sure fits the data that I have.
49erMan, What ISP are you using. I have JUNO. Lets see if there is any commonality between the ISP involved here. Anybody else that is seeing these issues, just jump in.

I doubt that. They would not be able to coordinate that across so many different ISP's. Unless that explains why some US members are not having a problem here?
Moderators, can you hint at the site traffic? Has it dropped off in the last day or two? Can you tell the mix of US vs. Canadian traffic?

LOL!!!! Wow, that's a good one. Dave has really made some people extremely paranoid around here.
First, DNS 101....the root servers don't hold specific domain name information. All they do is provide information on where to find first-level domain-name servers which service top-level domain names (.com .net .org, etc), which in turn point to second level domain name servers and so forth down the line.
So even if Dave was able to get a court order to pull entries it would only be technically possible at the DNS server that actually has the zone information for the pirate sites, but it would also be totally un-enforcebale (is that a word?) because all the pirate sites would have to do is get a DNS server in Romania or something.

Guys, cmon what you experienced this morning was a normal Internet outage, it had nothing to do with Dave. First of all did you even consider traffic was high because of last night's hashing? Perhaps the Web or DNS servers for the DEN were overloaded or down, who knows.
Instead of coming up with far-fetched conspiracy theories why don't all the people who had trouble getting to the pirate sites post the name of your ISPs so we can see if there's a pattern.
Besides and concrete evidence though, you guys just had some technical difficulties.

I'm here via the normal, non-anonymous off shore route now. And it is working. But really, for the last 24 hours, it was impossible to even ping the pirate sites. They just didnt exist. Yet, using an off shore anonymizer, it was a piece of cake to get to the sites.
And that is why I said "I hope I'm not doing a Chicken Little." It is awful far fetched, but then again... You know DTV is serious. It is the kind of stunt they would pull to keep people from getting information.

Nothing so extraordinary I'm afraid.
Apparently there were some phone company routing issues yesterday

...sounds to me like an issue with your ISP, I have seen that happen before where I can only access certain sites and not others, then later on it works again.

So now this thread can take the same twist that the hashing threads take in the technical forums. Somebody can say "Hey, don't give DTV any ideas!!!" :)
