Hi all,

I asked a question the other day in a different forum if you could get DTV in Canada with a non-hacked card and the answer is apprently yes, but I have another question or two.

I know there is a big crackdown on stealing Direct signals in Canada, but I want to know if you can get a paid subscription to DTV in Eastern Canada.

I have a friend in the US that will set it up for me, so that part is taken care of, but is that considered part of the illegal trade that the police are talking about or is that okay?

If someone did knock on my door and say, "'you have a direct system" (unlikely I know) and I tell them that I pay for it, would that be the end of it or that also considered piracy?

I understand from my friend that because of spot beams, I wouldn't get any network stations with a sub (that sucks), but I could get most of the other channels.

They also said they would send out a new card for me -- I assume a P4. Are their any concerns using a P4 in Canada or will it work just like the HU?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Interstin'....try a lil' experiment...
try walkin' into a local Best Buy Canada store (if you have 'em yet), or Costco...find out which dss service they are using for display channels in their TV sales area. I can verify Best Buy Canada displays CBS HDTV network channel (supposedly pre-recorded...yep right, that's what the big dish is for on the roof right guys?). And also I saw an active dishnet receiver in a Costco Canada store. Of course the card slot was all taped up...wonder why they would do somethin' stupid like that? LOL Yeah, its illegal in Canada for who don't have the luxury of a US address...or who aren't a big rich corporation that ain't so easy to pick on...

CBS is transmitted in HDTV format through BEV I believe... BEV does have HDTV transmissions and IRD's capable of receiving them.

and that 'active' DISHNETWORK IRD was probably a BEV unit as well.. since DISH makes the BEV IRD's, and not 'all' are labeled BEV...

It would be considered illegal as per the Supreme Court Ruling.

I see your point Doc,
However, how many Bell stores have you been to recently that had receivers for sale with big DISHNETWORK letters printed on the front? Just curious....

when a new IRD comes out (ie pvr5100 i think),, the first ones for sale (ie Radio Shack etc) are all Dishnetwork labelled, (I used to sell for Radio Shack and Bev Direct, til I retired)..the manuals and card are Bev,, and the supplied dish is Bev,,,,, the dealers will have one of the first units they receive as a display model, if you were to buy one,, you would probably get the BEV labeled one from the storage room. The first 2700's,, (I still have one) were labeled Dish,, I also have a 3100 labeled Dish... it's fairly common with the first ones to the market. Ususally the second warehouse shipment (ie from Rat Shack) will be properly labeled, box and everything...

at least, that's what I've found... :)
