Vietnam Veterans Association
By ---- Forrey

We asked our local Target store to be a sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event.

We received back a reply from Target management that veterans do not meet
our area of giving. Target only donates to the areas of the arts, social
actions, gay and lesbian causes, and education.

My thought: If the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans in general,
do not meet their donation criteria, something is wrong at Target. We were
not asking for thousands of dollars, not even hundreds, but simply
sponsorship of an endorsement for a memorial remembrance.

As follow-up, I e-mailed the corporate headquarters and their response was
the same. Personally, I will NOT be purchasing anything at Target Stores
again.

If the Vietnam Veteran or Veterans in general do not meet their area of
giving, then why should I, as a Vietnam veteran, spend my
hard earned money in their stores?

Please pass this on to as many people as you know.

Sincerely,
Veterans Helping Veterans

PS: Target will also not allow the Marines to collect for Toys For Tots
during the holidays.

I am glad you posted this in the B.S. forum.

Personally, I can not stand seeing any company, regardless of my personal feelings toward that company, be taken through the mud because of bad information.

Before allowing stories to continue, it is often a good idea to confirm the story.

I went to SNOPES.com and did a search for the word TARGET and came up with this: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/boycotts/target.asp

I don't care what you think of Target, but at least find out if the story is true before posting something like this.

edit: removed link that should not have been here to begin with at request of another MOD. Sorry, my mistake.

After reading from the link BoneDaddy posted, I find merit in the boycott of Target.

The moving wall is not only a memorial to our lost patriots, but is a history lesson to our children. The perspective one gets from looking down the wall of names is awe inspiring. Those are only a few of the great men and women who gave their lives to insure our freedom.

Target has every right to spend their money were they see fit as do I. Personally, I will give my business to those companies who truely support our troops, especially those who have fallen for us.

This email was also recieved by some of my friends on 01/28/03. We sent target an email and asked them what was going on. This was their response.

I wrote to target. This was there reply

Dear *NAME REMOVED*,

Thank you for allowing us to respond to the misinformation that is being
circulated about Target and our support of veterans and the Vietnam Wall.

In March of 2002, an Indiana veteran in Howard County asked one of our
stores for a $100 cash donation to support a display of the "moving wall."
While our stores are not able to give cash contributions to any
organization, they are able to make limited contributions in the form of a
GiftCard. Our corporate giving program is handled through a grants based
process. To be eligible to receive a grant from Target, an organization
must meet tax-exempt guidelines. The veteran neither asked for nor did we
decline any request for a simple sponsorship or the use of the Target name.

Target has many established partnerships with veterans' organizations.
Target Corporation will also be one of the sponsors of the national 2003
tour of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's outreach initiative, "The Wall
That Heals." "The Wall That Heals" is a traveling Vietnam Veterans
memorial and museum that has a strong educational component for schools and
also serves to honor all our veterans. For more information about Target's
support of veterans and "The Wall That Heals", please visit the national
Veterans of Foreign Wars on their website at www.vfw.org/news/target.htm.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. Target appreciates your
interest and the opportunity to personally explain to you about our ongoing
commitment to all veterans.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hanson

BrainDamage, thanks for clearing this up. I was very upset when I read the opening post. I'm glad that someone with the WHOLE story was available to make sure we all know how someone with a little knowledge can be very dangerous. A lesson to all to check our sources.

I was not the one to clear it up. I was not the one with the whole story either.

These facts are available to YOU and EVERYONE else that wants to bother to take the time to look for them before spreading rumors.

In the future, if you feel the inclination, check out www.snopes.com and you will be able to verify or deny just about anything.

I think you will be very surprised as to how much B.S. is floating around.

Well all this is telling me is Target is trying to patch holes...It is your Forum and you can do what you want and post what ya want but the fact is true...Target did say what they said to this particular Vet...Dohhh!!!

Furthermore, your vfw link didn't work...I went there and searched and found the information of Target apologizing for the incident...

This is nothing more than Damage Control which was exercised by the Dixie Chicks as well for some of their actions...

So in essences you have a veteran Forrey who is now being called a liar for something he brought to everyone's attention...

If you notice it says he was mis-informed...about the procedure by the local store...hummmm

Let's see Mr. Forrey contacted the corporate office and received the same information as the local store gave him...

Target corp. figured he would not followup any further...well they were wrong and to make a long story short he decided to inform all veterans via the world wide web and email...

Target gets wind and goes into action with Damage Control...

So there is no misinformation only trying to save face...

With that said I will leave it like that and you can make your own judgement...this is your forum and you can squealch the truth all you want and your little puppets can reply with Doh messages too it really doesn't matter...but there is always two sides to the story...have fun!

Hey Crownvic...

i'm 52 years old, been married 3 times, have 4 kids and 1 stepchild, and my only regreat is that because of physical reasons i was turned down when i volunteered to go to Nam. VETERIANS who served in war time are my heros especially the ones that gave up life so i could enjoy the life that i do.
i just wanted to say thanks to you guys, and to remind everyone to support our troops in iraq. I do hope that everyone says a prayer for the ones that lost their life.
OH as for Target,i've never been in one.
