Superchips reader / programmer

I know that I should have posted this is the Automotive section, but no one seems to visit there much. If you need to move it please feel free. I recently began thinking about learning to program chips for the new diesel trucks that are out there. Inparticularly my own. I know how easy it would be to just give someone 400.00 - 500.00 dollars to give me a chip but where is the fun in that. I was just hoping that someone may have some information on actually programming your own code onto the chips and what kind of hardware you would need. I know it must be possible because so many small shops are doing their own programming now. They are of no help because they only want to sell the chip and I want to learn. Although I can understand why and don't blame them.
