I have someone who has a stand alone TiVo unit and a lifetime sub. They are using digital cable service. Can I hook up a 5th gen RCA sat receiver to the TiVo and will it work with no problems? Thanks.

Yes it'll work fine, just re-run guided setup. Use a serial connection if your receiver supports it, as that is MUCH better and more reliable than Infrared.

The receiver only has a low speed data port. Will this work as well? Thanks maharg18 for your help.

Yes, that will work fine. You may or may not have to get an adapter or different cable depending on what he has.

Is it possible for a satellite provider to find out from tivo that a person isn't paying for their satellite sub? For example, you do the guided setup for satellite and tivo decides to contact that provider and tell them that you are also a tivo subscriber, but the sat provider says wait a min...

Many people, including myself, have been running it that way for years without any trouble. Seems to me if Tivo did do that, then they would breach their terms of service agreement, which says they only collect anonymous information. That would open them up to a whole mess of lawsuits from users.
