Is it possible to subscribe to XM radio in Canada? I have every intention to pay for the service, but can you subscribe in Canada? or is it like DirectTV? Since I bought my Pioneer HU in the USA it is XM ready anyway so I just need a tuner and antenna.

I believe you can just register the radio over the internet. They do not require a mailing address (I think).

Doesn't this fall into "receiving foreign encrypted signals"? Is XM a lawful broadcaster in Canada?
I'm wondering here whether there's another big wave of stuff coming in relation to this . . .:Z

Well my intention is not to exploit the foreign encrypted signal idea. I am quite willing to pay for the service. But I hope that's true that you can just register and activate no questions asked. Although, paying with a Canadian credit card might be a little obvious ;)

I am a canadian and have a subscription to xm. When I contacted xm to subscribe I was told I could not have a canadian address for billing and they could not process a canadian credit card. I work for a company with a US terminal and have the bill sent there and forwarded to me. Xm will bill for 6 or 12 months. I also know of other people who pay with credit card but don't know how they got around the Canadian thing.

I don't think so at this point as there is no cdn competition and doubt there will be.
Kind of like C-band satellite, not being enforced by anyone because theres no competition.

Once the penetration rate becomes noticable I think you'll see groups like Chum and Corus recognize the threat and we'll be back in the grey/black market satellite wars all over again.

Rise, did you have to give them a US address or did you register over the net?

XM Satellite Radio is illegal in Canada just like Dish Network and Directv are illegal in Canada. They are all covered by the same law, Section 9.1(c) of the Radio Communication Act.

Technically you are correct. However it is not being enforced at this time. Thats not to say that it won't be down the road though.
Owning and using big c-band dishes are also illegal according to the supreme court, however there are still 300 000 people using them in canada without interference.
You notice that neither BEV nor Starchoice has any C-band tradein offers, only those using Dish Network or Directv.
Realistically, laws meant to protect legitimate businesses are usually enforced only when a business sees itself being out of pocket.

Next time someone dealer goes to court in Canada for selling DTV or Dish Network he should take a portable XM Satellite Radio into court and play it. And then turn around and tell the judge that everyone in the court room has now committed an illegal act by listening/decoding Satellite Radio (even if you were to be subscribing to it).
