Ergen Talks New Satellite, HD Content
During his August Charlie Chat Monday, EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen talked about last weeks launch of the companys ninth satellite and how the new spacecraft will deliver advanced services.
Ergen was present for the EchoStar IX flight, which took place from the Pacific Thursday from Sea Launchs ocean-based platform. Ergen said the satellite, a Ku/Ka-Band spacecraft, may become operational by Oct. 1.
Given that consumer demand is growing for more satellite-TV local TV markets and HDTV, this satellite will help us do these things, Ergen said.
More HD content is in the works for EchoStars DISH Network. Ergen said the company has been eyeing potential deals with ESPN HD as well as gaining HD content from Bravo, Cinemax and Starz.
Ergen also said the new satellite contains a payload that will help the company develop a high-speed broadband service.
