Here's some info that I have cut and pasted over time regarding this problem Hope it helps.
TO FIX:
Open up the case and looking from the front to the rear, in the lower left area towards you there are some large round blue colored electronics components. Now to the immediate right of these components there is a black 1/2" diode soldered at both ends to the board (it looks like a resistor) Check this diode and I will bet it is blown. The diode is listed as cr14108 on the board. Take a meter set to diode check, place the test leads on both sides of the diode and then reverse them. If it is good you will get a reading one way and not the other, if it is bad you will either not get a reading at all or get a reading both ways through the diode. If so, replace it and this should fix like new. This has been posted as the part you need - radioshack part number 276-1102 pack of 2 costs .69 cents.
CAUSE:
Surges
TIPS:
First A surge protector is a MUST, always protect electronic equipment with a surge protector, got it? Never ever repeatedly plug in and out directly to wall socket or hold down buttons while unplugging several times to cold boot as I have read so many times, this is rubbish and is the cause for frying so many irds I suspect.
To cold boot, when changing cards for example, simply turn off surge
protected power bar for a few minutes, this should be all you'll ever need to do. AND DO NOT PLUG IN DIRECTLY TO WALL WITHOUT SURGE PROTECTOR let alone repeatedly.
Circuit board number CR14108 is the spot location for diode manufacturer part number BYW100, cross referenced to a NTE part number, it is as follows;
BYW100 = NTE587 = Diode-SI,200V, 1A, Ultra fast, DO-41
Which according to the cross reference data, is also the same for BYW50 thru 200
Also, you will not find any parts to these receivers in a small parts dealer. Find your local electronics dealer and they should have it, or look in the www world and order it thru mail.
