I am a NFL Sunday Ticket subscriber, On one of my Hughes "Director's Pack" receivers (Model GAEB0) I'm having a rather annoying problem with the favorites list. I can't add channels 701 and 702 to my favorite's list. I can check the checkbox for those chans in the favorites setup. However they don't stay added to the list. If I turn to "fav all" I can view the channels no problem.
I talked to DirecTV about it, they said it is a manufacturer's problem. I called Hughes. They said it is happening with a number of receivers and that is a programming problem.
I was curious what is the cause of the problem really and what can I do to fix it?

It might be a firmware bug, (programming problem) If that's the case, it's not something you can easily fix yourself. You'd need to dump the firmware and patch it, and reprogram the flash mem inside the receiver. I'm not familiar with that model, and it may be possible without removing the chip, but is still a formidable task, if indeed that's where the problem lies.
At this point, I'd call Hughes back and see if there's something they could do for you.

With all due respect, I have to disagree. And I have a hunch that DTV should try a little harder to support its users because they really don't want to give people a legitimate reason to be altering their IRD firmware right now. Just think how useful that would be in some of their End User Court cases. "That is right your honor, the end user that we are sueing tried to get us to help him, but we left him no choice but to hack his IRD's firmware to fix that bug."

How could I check my firmware version? I have another receiver (appears to be exactly the same) that doesn't have the problem. I was thinking I could compare firmware versions. (Is this info accessible through a menu?)
