Is there a way to reset this receiver so that it will accept an HU card.

even if that series of card worked with that ird directv would not activate it for you. you will have to get a new card from them.

he probably allready has a hu card, but some utv dont work with hu's anymore once you put a p4 on them I have a friend that also needs to know any help will be greatly appreciated

Since the ird is a 490re that means at 1 time it used a HU card and the operating system was version 3.5. Now if it only take P4s then it has taken the 3.7 update. What you need to do is get an image of version 3.5 and re-install it back on the hard drive. ;)
