I screwed up and connected my UTV 40GB hdd to my computer running win xp pro. It would'nt even boot to XP, just reset. I freaked and put the drive back into the UTV, but now the light is blinking orange and nothing happens.
Did I mess up my HDD? Can it be recovered?
:(

Windows XP adds a small signature to your HDD when you have it attached to your PC upon booting up, this will prevent your UTV or Tivo from booting.
More than likely you will need to format the drive and redownload the software from Microsoft. You will receive version 3.7 which requires a P4 card.

You can use a third party partitioning software. Some are DOS based. I may be mistaken, but I believe that you can format from XP, just dont boot to it afterwards.

This is probably a good reason for those with a UTV to take an image of their hard drive BEFORE it updates to 3.7 just in case something like this should happen... (hard drive crash etc).
Now that I think of it... is it possible to copy/ghost or somehow take a copy of the hard drive???? I upgraded my TIVO last year to bigger drives, but never contemplated a UTV upgrade or backup.
