I have a Bell expressvu 5100 PVR, similar I guess to the Dish 501. Does anyone know if the hard drive can be upgraded in size? How about format for the drive?

Yes, I believe it should be a plug and play, add a new drive, download the latest software and you should be stylin'

Has anybody out there actually done this to the 501? How big of a hardrive can you use? And for people like me, who have never done this before, where do you download the latest software from? Any help for a novice would be helpful. Point me in the right direction!

It can be done. Only use seagate or maxtor hard drive since the firmware is pretty much limited to some models. You can upgrade to 80GB or 120GB and anything over 100GB may require the yellow for it to work properly. Best place you can get information on upgrading your hard drive is Yahoo's Group 'Dishmod'.

It's not exactly plug'n'play since it does require some modification to the receiver's firmware so the new hard drive can be married to the receiver.

If it's too complex for you to handle, you can send the receiver to Bev and they can do the hard drive upgrade for you.

The process is upgrading your current 501 drive and will not gain any services or hack into getting any services. This is just a technical hardware replacement for a damaged drive.
