April 14th, 2004, 12:52 AM
On Tuesday April 13, DirecTV began the shut down of the datastream for the HU cards. Starting with the music oddly enough, then moving to Fox Regional Sports and Adult channels. All HUs are to be useless by April 27.
(Just thoguht I'd let you guys over here know, since this is where I originally learned how to install my firt DirecTV system and stuff...)

*yawn* rumors and speculation
Why bother to post this? Even if it WAS correct, there's 1000x the BS out there so it doesn't do anyone any good to have yet ANOTHER "confirmed" report of the HU shutdown date. It doesn't matter! No one will believe you and if someone does then they'll believe the next tim ---- or harry that comes along and says HUs are going to last until 2010!

Never said it wasn't, just that the SPECIFIC dates people always try to quote are ridiculous for reasons stated in my previous post. Hell I guessed the HUs would be dead within Jan 04...

XMyth,
Funny I stopped coming here that much before the site closed because of people like you. I've popped in once and awhile just because I've been coming here since '99 and this is where I learned and helped others. Your attitude is what starting killing dsschat and made it an extremely unfriendly site a long long time ago. I figured I'd see if anyone was still around here and see what they said about the HU stream shutdown and the first post I read is filled with a negative response and flame to someone else. I see Rise has changed the site and what it was, the way it looks, but I guess the real Den is gone, but the ----ty attitude is still here. Sad to finally say I am completely over this place.
Rise - get rid of the attitudes here and maybe it will feel like a Den again.

Ouch! Although I will not completely agree with everything Tion says or the manner in which he says it, his points are well said. I am not an expert and not a prolific poster, but I am an avid fan and long time supporter and reader of the den, and it does appear that somewhere along the rode we got off track. I have said it before, where are the Cat D-8s, the bidladies, the rayNman's, and the others who really carried this place along a while back?
Sadly I spend more time on some other forums that I originally thought were imitators. Today, 4/15, may well prove to be day to remember in the lore of the battle versus Dave. If there was a black Sunday, then maybe today was Ash Wednesday. Audio only, just does make for much fun.
Lastly, Xmyth it is tom, ---- or harry not tim. One last parting shot....

People like me? It's a shame all the old posts are locked away now, but it's not like you'd care anyways. I was one of the helpful ones. Maybe I flew off the handle there, but I stand by what I said....it's tiring (don't say "just ignore it"...I don't care) to see the same type of posts over and over and over again. I wasn't flaming the poster directly, maybe he quoted from another site and thought it was true because a "mod" there posted it....doesn't really matter.
People complained about the atmosphere at the Den, but the truth is before it shut down this forum was ontop of its game as far as public forums go. Sure they had a few other nice ones but this was *THE* place to go and it was the people with attitudes like you people bitch about that made it that way....that drove away the newbs who didn't feel like searching or actually learning. I'm not saying that's YOU, but there weren't many of those here.
The truth of the matter is, the only ones who complained about the atmosphere at the Den were the ones that left or weren't participating in any discussions. The active ones never complained....we *LIKED* the focused discussions and lack of lazy newbs.
vyral, I didn't mean any personal offense towards you in my original post. I was posting about a general thing people do and your post just happened to be the one I replied to.

It's ok. Every once in awhile I'll go forum hopping and I see soo much crap out there, so I know where you stand on that. When the dates were originally posted I said "Well, first it was September, then November, then New Years day, then the end of February, now 4-13?". I guess its like the boy who cried wolf sorta...if enough people tell lies about the same thing, any one that says somthing about it is assumed wrong. It's really hard to tell who to believe these days.

I would just like to take a moment to thank all the wonderful people who made the Den what it was during the "golden age". No matter what gets swapped or turned off, DTV can't take away the awesome knowledge and sheer enjoyment I was able to get here thanks to some highly technical people who were willing to share it with us in a way that anyone willing to put in some effort could join in. I don't know exacly what's taboo here now so I will avoid naming names, but you guys gave me so much and asked for nothing in return. I miss those times far more than anything. :(
THANK YOU!!

The Den was an always will be remembered as being the best site out there barn none for this hobby. I'm not a newbie by any stretch, but am no expert by any means. I contributed when I could whether here or with my friends and family. The attitudes I spoke of here didn't drive me to another site, but what it did was far worse. I stopped really posting and helping others on this forum an on another that I frequent.
I can understand being tired of the rumors and the newbie questions that you could write a thousand page FAQ on, but I cannot understand why this site killed the community feeling it had, like you belonged to something. It became I site that I came to just for an answer to something, but not a place I cared to put one letter on a post, because there wasn't a shortage of smart@ss comments that would surely follow no matter what you posted. Maybe my reply to your post was a little harsh, but that is frustration from seeing such a great place sink the way it did and has. Best of luck to this place as I have thousands of hours of fond memories, but time to move on.
Rise - Thanks for everything and for keeping this site up in whatever capacity or direction.

Even though I've just tried to learn, I thought I'd contribute just once. Everyone I know that doesn't know what a test card is, and subscribes, still has their original card(HU), and have never been contacted about having to switch. And I also find it funny that they have all had techs out to their houses in the past month to get their dishes updated, and not a word was mentioned to any of them that they would need a new card, or would be receiving one. Did I miss something, but I thought all cards were being replaced? Not in my area..

Okay so maybe the HU stream is going down...I'm sure there's a P4 hack out there and I gurantee it will come out once the stream is lost.
There was a point in time in which people thought the HU was "unhackable" but as soon as the H-card went out the internet was flooded with information regarding the HU card.
Everything engineered can be reverse engineered...patience is the key and we'll be up and running again and DAVE will spend another $25M to swap out cards once again.
Let the good times roll!!!

Actually, that's the unnerving thing about this...the HU hack out before the H cards were useless. This wait for the P4 hack makes it seem like there's no one out there who can deliver. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't....only time will tell.

I think that hackers are just doing the smart thing by waiting until the HU stream is completely gone before releasing the new P4 hack to the world. This way, the P4's might stay on a little longer then the 3's did. By the time everything really goes down DAVE will be kicking himself for spending so much money on a problem that just won't go away. He could have saved a lot by just letting us have our way.

out of curiousity i looked up the word "hacker". most people in the scene are hackers(2). then there is the smaller group of hackers(3) that actually write code. then the very few hackers(4) that make it all possible. directv fits into the hackers(2) definition because they just can not seem to master their own technology. they try or claim to try but just can not or have not for whatever reason. unless they are hackers(4) and did this on purpose.
Main Entry: hack·er
Pronunciation: 'ha-k&r
Function: noun
1 : one that hacks
2 : a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity <a tennis hacker>
3 : an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer
4 : a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system

The only reason the HU was hacked was because of leaked information. IF the info wasn`t leaked, who knows how long it would of taken. As for the P4 and p5, who knows if and when it will be hacked. My guess is at least a year

Well , a person leaked the information on the P4 to the Den.....in August 2002 so it's been a yer...so there should be no problem.....
The hack is Out...... it's just been secret........ and will be done
probably on a Direct appliction approach.... to elimate Dealer B/S on the Net...

If there were a hack out and it was being kept a sercet then you wouldn't be posting it on a public bulliten board. As i said, there is no hack and would be surprised if anything happens inside a year.

Now lets take this thread full circle...
First it started as a revelation that the HU stream is gone, then to fond memories of the Den in its hay day, and now to dreams of a hack that most think does not exist.
And the real problem that remains is that even if there is a way to the P4 eden, the ability to freely discuss, teach, and learn the way is gone. I agree that the Den was and will always be the best. Too many the fun of the DTV experience was the trip not the destination, and that is what we have lost.
So where do we go now?

Hey XMyth,
Nice to see you around. I miss the old DEN. I really miss the Friday Night beer and popcorn sessions. F@#$ TV, that was entertainment. I went from being Ignorent to less ignorent here and many of the people who helped are still out there but they are hard as hell to find, (as it should be given how hard DAVE has been looking for them.).
Actually here's a question, Can the old database or parts of it be restored now that the HU card can't be used to get TV anymore?
I guess thats up to Rises lawyers and the courts but given I don't see any H stuff I'm going to assume it's not possible.
Either way thanks for the good times and one hell of a fight Rise.

Someone else asked that earlier in this thread (or maybe in another one...), but the short answer is Rise would have to relocate too or they'd just bust him again. It's not just the location of the site that matters but the location of the owner too.
