Hitachi Ultravision Rear Projection & HDTV

Long Story Short:

I recently purchased a Hi-Def TV and Upgraded my DirecTV Package. During the installation the DirecTV tech suggested that we try hooking up an additional HD Receiver on MY 60" Hitachi Ultravision TV, Which is about 8 years old. He said he has seen HD receivers work well on Non-HD TV's when they are rear projection.

Any truth to this?

Well, the better the source the better the picture, to a point. I don't think you'd notice a better picture than you're already getting with your current receiver.
