I'm interested in taking a Direct TIVO back to Canada with me but I'm not sure it will work properly without being able to dial in for the initial set-up.
Has anyone in Canada been able to call in to get the TIVO guide from there?
Thanks!

The directivo will work anwhere that you can receive the satellite signal as it download the info via satellite, not the phone line like the regular standalone tivo does...
A standalone tivo will work in canada if you modify it to download the program data from a free source instead of TIVO.

Thank you, Rise - much appreciated!
My US hubby will be very happy. After living with TIVO, being without it is awful. No more commercials and always something we want to watch!

I understood the INITIAL setup had to be from a land line within the USA. Will running the setup from within Canada actually work?

Only the standalone Tivos need a phone connection, the Directv with Tivo models pull all the data directly from the satellite.
For standalone Tivo's, they now will work in Canada and suport most of the cdn cable and satellite companies
