I am in a very small apartment building of 5 units. Three of the untis want DirecTV service. DirecTV sent me to outside contractor to get an estimate on installation, but I am afraid it is going to be prohibitively expensive. It seems to me I should be able to have one standard Dual LNB (or do they have a 4 LNB?) dish installed and then run a single cable down to each apartment, where it goes into a multis switch so it can be used in multiple rooms or with dual tuner DirecTivos. Does this sound right? Is this what the outside contactor is going to do anyway? If so, then I should be able to get one unit installed for free and just run the cabling for the other units myself, right?

Yes, it can be done on smaller installations such as yours. The cost you would have gotton would have been one for install of a MDU (Multi-dwelling unit), which is a complex distribution system that can be used with dozens of units.

You will be able to do what you describe, using a multi-switch

All you'd have to do is use a multi-feed dish. The latest versions now have a multi-switch built in which allows you to connect 4 receivers without any other external gizmos, except the ground blocks. So all you'd have to do is run one cable from each of the 3 apts, up to the dish.
