Dish Network DVR hard drive life

I know that hard drive life in general can vary, but I am wondering what peoples experiences are with these DVR/PVR hard drive recorders? How many years would one last on average? How reliable are they? Is the hard drive always running or does it idle/standby when you are not using the tuners?

Does anyone know what the HD size of the new DVR 625 receiver is?

Mine just crashed after not quite 3 years. I don't have my model info available, but it was installed in July 2003.

I'm looking for info on the hard drive format to see if I can use file recovery software to retrieve any of the programs that were on it.

Usually if the hard drive crashes, then that's it, you can't retrieve any of the programs that were on it.
The only thing you can do is get a new box.
There is no recovery for these drives.
