View Full Version : Digital Satellite Holiday Buyers Guide

Digital satellite systems make a great holiday gift for others or even yourself. As with many consumer electronics components, there is a seemingly endless amount of choices and options. As with any purchase, it is necessary to weigh in the pros and cons to the different models to avoid disappointment or to avoid a purchase that will not suit your needs in the future. The choices are extensive, all offering different features and offerings. When choosing home entertainment components, you will ideally want to be choosing a system that will not only suit your needs now, but also in the future. For example, if you are planning to invest in a high definition television in the future, you may want to choose a satellite receiver that supports HDTV now, rather than having to purchase another system down the road.

For this article, we have highlighted a number of popular systems for all the North American DTH providers.

Important Points to Remember

Proprietary systems - Its important to remember that all the DTH satellite systems sold in North America are designed for reception of programming from a certain provider. For example, you cannot use a Directv system to receive programming from Dish Network. For this reason, its important to study the offerings of the different systems to figure out which system is best for you. Although the different systems offer a lot of identical programming, they also have differences in price, packaging, and offer differing specialty programming. For example, Directv tends to offer more sports programming while Dish Network offers more ethnic and specialty channels. Chief factors to consider are packages that best suit you, availability of local programming, as well as high definition offerings. Once you have determined the service that best suits you, you can then determine which equipment suits you the best as well.
For U.S. residents, your choices are either Directv or Dish Network. For Canadian residents, your choices are Star Choice or Bell Expressvu

High Definition Systems - High Definition television is the latest craze in consumer electronics. It allows a much greater resolution and picture quality compared to standard definition and analog programming. In order to view HDTV channels, you need a HDTV ready or compatible television, as well as a high definition satellite or off air receiver. Bear in mind that only a select number of programs available are broadcast in high definition. Your satellite provider will provide a list of the channels that they make available in high definition format. All the rest of their programming will be offered in standard definition digital format. Some HDTV capable satellite receivers also offer the ability to decode off air HDTV signals, while others do not. If there are off air digital television stations in your area that you wish to receive, then you will need either a receiver that will process off air digital signals, or a separate digital television tuner or decoder.

DVR System - A digital video recorder, also known as a personal video recorder, allows you to record television programming directly onto a hard drive for viewing at a later time. All of the DTH satellite providers now offer satellite receivers with integrated DVR systems. Most charge a small monthly service fee for use of these. DVR systems can differ in the size of hard drive they include. Larger hard drives mean more recording time. These can be upgraded later, however it is always more cost effective to obtain a larger hard drive during the initial purchase. Most DVR systems use a little more than 1GB per hour of programming, so one with a 120GB drive will offer just over 100 hours of recording time. Bear in mind that standard DVR/satellite receivers cannot record HDTV programming. You will want a HDTV DVR system if you want to record these. Additionally, most integrated satellite receivers are only capable of recording satellite signals, they cannot record off air signals. If you want to record programming from other sources as well, then you will likely want a standalone DVR system capable of recording off air, satellite or cable signals.

High Definition DVR System - Most of the DTH satellite providers also now offer DVR systems capable of recording high definition programming. These also record standard digital satellite programming as well, just as a standard satellite DVR system would. As with the standard satellite DVR system, most of these can only record satellite programming. Also bear in mind that high definition programming takes up a lot more hard drive space than regular standard definition programming. Most use about 10GB per hour of high definition programming. A 120GB hard drive will only record 12 hours of all high definition programming. For this reason, always purchase the model with the largest capacity drive to avoid disappointment.

Specialty Systems - Specialty satellite systems are also now coming onto the market, such as the new Dish Network Pocket Dish, allowing you to transfer recorded content from a Dish Network DVR to the Pocket Dish for viewing on the road. For maximum benefit, your Dish Network DVR needs to have a USB 2.0 output. If it does not, then transfers are done in real time over the composite RCA cables (eg: 30min. show takes 3 minutes to transfer)

Directv is the United States leading DTH satellite provider with over 13 million subscribers. They currently offer over 500 channels including local network programming in most major U.S. markets.

Directv H20 MPEG4 HDTV Receiver

http://forums.digitalinsurrection.com/images/reviews/directvh20.gif

Introduction: Late last year, Directv announced a pending transition to a new encoding scheme for their HDTV programming. The new encoding scheme will use MPEG4, which allows a HDTV channel to be compressed to allow up to 4 per satellite transponder, rather than the 1 per transponder with the current encoding scheme. The new scheme is not compatible with older HDTV receivers, meaning an equipment upgrade will be required in the future. In the beginning, Directv will begin offering regional locals in high definition, eventually offering up to 150 markets with a number of additional satellite launches over the next couple of years. Once complete, they will also convert their existing high definition programming to the new MPEG4 scheme. At that time, you will need a MPEG4 compliant satellite receiver to continue receiving HDTV programming. Directv has just announced a $99 MPEG4 upgrade fee to upgrade your receiver to the latest MPEG4 version.

The new Directv H20 receiver is the first MPEG4 compliant receiver. This will allow subscribers of select markets to receive MPEG4 HDTV locals in addition to the standard HDTV channels and regular programming. As of this date, Directv has MPEG4 locals in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Washington DC, Tampa, Dallas and Houston local zones. Subscribers in other areas should contact Directv to find out when locals will be available in high definition in their area. When they are, local retailers will begin making MPEG4 compliant receivers available in your area.

Free to air satellite systems allow you to tap into the ever changing world of wild and network feeds, ethnic and international programming and much more. It has become popular once again due in part to the transition from analog to digital. This has increased the quality and amount of programming available as well as bringing the costs of equipment down considerably as well. Free to air systems have several variants, and these choices will affect the type of programming you will be able to receive.

C-Band Free to Air Systems – These are the big dish systems, with typical dish sizes ranging from 6’ to 10’. Reception of older, less powerful satellite will require a larger dish size, as will reception of satellites outside of their principal broadcasting footprint. These come in both analog and digital systems. Additionally, there is a digital subscription service available known as 4DTV, which use the General Instrument Digicipher II system and equipment.

Ku-Band Free to Air Systems – These are the most popular free to air systems, due to smaller dish sizes, more powerful satellites and abundance of free and specialty programming. Most Ku satellite programming has made the transition to digital. The general standard is a digital format known as DVB (Digital Video Broadcast). This allows a DVB receiver to receive any signal broadcast in the DVB standard. Dish sizes typically range from 24” to more than 3 feet, depending on the power of the satellites you are trying to receive and your physical location. Ku systems come in both a fixed dish configuration, suitable for people that want to receive programming from a single satellite. It is also popular to add more than 1 fixed satellite dish through a DISEQC switch to the satellite receiver. This allows the receiver to choose which satellite dish to use depending on which program you want to watch. The other configuration is a rotating dish configuration. This adds a motor to the satellite dish, which allows it to move from satellite to satellite. These configurations are more expensive and complex than fixed dish installations and is suitable for people looking to receive programming from multiple satellites.

Fortec Star Lifetime Ultra

http://forums.digitalinsurrection.com/images/reviews/fortecultra.gif

Introduction:
The Fortec Ultra is one of the premier blind search free to air receivers on the market.
