In an apparent policy shift, Xm Canada has indicated that they will now activate grey market XM Radio receivers.
This is good news for many Canadians that have existing XM Radio systems and wish to switch over to the new legal Canadian service. As many potential XM Canada subscribers have discovered, there is currently a large equipment price difference between U.S. systems and new Canadian systems. The Delphi SA10113 MyFi Portable XM2go for example is retailing for $399 CAD in stores in Canada despite retailing for $149 USD or less in the United States. Additionally, many of the models of receivers available from XM Radio are not yet available from XM Canada, such as the high end head units and modules, such as are available from Alpine.
The policy shift is a good way to woo over existing grey market subscribers by eliminating the requirement to purchase new equipment, which many people would be unwilling to do simply to receive the Canadian content. Because of the price differences, look for prices to come down dramatically in Canadian stores in the coming months.
