US sub in Canada

I am looking into picking up a receiver and was wondering if i bought a unit in Canada made for Canada, would I be able to subscribe with the US programing?

without question the answer is no. Units made and sold in Canada have a chipset installed that allows them to only receive the Canadian sub.

not a chipset, they are basing it on receiver id numbers.

you can buy a US system and subscribe to canadian programming though

Is this true? Sirius hardware purchased in Canada cannot be activated through Sirius US because of the firmware/serial #?

Being a Canadian Howard Stern fan, my intention was to purchase a satellite radio early in January in anticipation of Stern's first FCC free show, from a local Canadian retailer and activate through Sirius US. In fact, I called Sirius US and was told that I could activate a US Sirius subscription from Canada, as long as I provided a valid US mailing address.

Could someone shed more light on this so that I can save myself a trip to Buffalo to shop for a new Sirius satellite radio?

You may be able to convince a CSR to do it. Best to call US sirius in advance and tell them that a relative sent you a canadian sirius unit and you want to make sure you can get it activated and see what they say

Just enter a valid credit card and you will have Sirius...if you are withing approx 200 miles of U.S. border.....Canada has "banned" Howard, even on Sirius, so just dont say ur from Canada....give them a credit card number and make up an address and it will work. If you pay, they will activate!!!!
