I have a divice that uses Nickel-Cadmium batteries and I'm wanting to replace them with the newer Nickel/Metal Hydride. What I need to know is will the same charger charge the Hydrides that I'v been using on the Ni-Cd's or will I need a new charger designed for Hydrides. Thanks Tomcat1

I just replaced all my raido controlled airplanes,Flight packs an radio transmitter packs with them. I'd look up your local RC hobby dealer or look in a RC Flying mag.
I really like them, no need to recycle like Ni-cad and I get about 3-4 time's as many flights, But you can't pull them down below a certain voltage. \

There are some concerns using an old NiCad charger with newer NiMh batteries. Many of the older chargers rely strictly on a timer (when you plug in the battery, it'll always charge for an hour for example), some (better ones) connect to a thermal sensor imbedded in the battery. Yet another kind (the best ones) actually read the charge level of the battery.
The fixed-time chargers may or may not be bad for the NiMH,depending on the battery' s charge level. The temprature-based chargers will work if the NiMH battery is a ->DIRECT REPLACEMENT<-, usually stating on the battery or packaging that it is fully compatable and will work in older chargers. Otherwise, you cook the crap out of the battery, and it dies a quicker, ugly (may explode) death.
Chargers that read the voltage/charge level will work well, providing the NiMH and the NiCad are exactly the same voltage (they may not be).
The safest thing is to check with the device's manufacturer for compatability and cautions.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for the replys. They are the same voltage , I'll try to check and find out what kind of charger I have,I think its a voltage reading type. Thanks Tomcat1
