I live in the mountains of NC and have tried several off-air HD antennas for my local stations but have yet to find one that can consistantly give me even my one local channel a few miles from me. Depends on the weather. And when if ever will Direct be broadcasint more HD channels? I heard they'ree launching new sats...

DTV will eventually be offering HDTV channels for all their local markets, for now though they only serve a dozen markets
To pick up local HDTV, you just need a good outdoor UHF/VHF antenna like a channel master. Look for one that has at least a 50-60 mile range on UHF as that is what HDTV channels use
