SATELLITE TV: Court upholds DirecTV warning letters
02/16/2006
A federal appeals court upheld DirecTV Group Inc.'s right to send letters warning people who bought equipment to steal satellite-television signals that they'll be sued if they don't settle with the company.
DirecTV's use of letters threatening lawsuits doesn't violate federal racketeering laws, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Wednesday. The ruling affirmed a Los Angeles trial court's dismissal of a lawsuit that had accused DirecTV of extortion, and mail and wire fraud.
