Starmate Replay AC adapter

I recently bought my Starmate Replay from Best Buy but they didnt have any home kits in stock..noone seems to have them. Anyways, when i asked if they sold just an AC adapter that would power it in the meantime, the salesman told me no and that he had blown up his unit trying to use an aftermarket AC adapter. Was he just trying to get me to wait till they got home kits instock and make a couple extra bucks on me or is there really a risk in smoking my Starmate by using an aftermarket adapter?
