View Full Version : New XM Channels

XM apparently will announce major changes to its channel lineup Monday.
New channels said to include a new classic rock ("Big Tracks"), a "chill"
channel, a new HipHop/RB channel, some latin music, etc. There may also be
one or more channels deleted, but supposedly, more new added than old
deleted.

How can they do this without degrading audio quality even more? Has XM won
the race to hierarchical modulation?

If they did, then these new channels aren't going to be available to
existing hardware customers.

Legacy hardware is the nomenclature.

I think it has to do with bandwith used.
Perhaps more was negotiated with the satelitte company.

There is little doubt they WILL win it .. whether they have, that's another
issue.
I've heard there will be some deletions, but fewer than the number of
additions. Next month they have the two surround channels coming online, in
addition.
The assumption that H/M will invalidate all previously existing receivers is
not automatically correct. There was an "awareness" that XM was working on
H/M a very long time before Sirius ever mentioned it. The original info I
received on it suggested that, at that time, receivers were already
configured to receive H/M. Have no idea to what extent that is true...

A little more info -- apparently, the number of music channels will increase
from 67 to 69, which includes the new Classic Rock channel as well as the
"chill" channel.
The classic rock is a big deal IMO, as it gives them the opportunity to make
Top Tracks a much more focused channel and put some of the 80s/90s crap on
the new channel.

I would think there is little chance of that -- after having dropped LM and
basically left Boneyard to pick up the slack.

It appears that XM Music Lab (progressive rock/jam bands) will get the ax,
along with "neo-soul" channel The Flow. Neither appears on the new DirecTV
lineup.

I've seen people mentioning they like the Music Lab but I could never
tolerate it myself.

That's funny. XM knows nothing about Metal.

This rumor is the result of some DirecTV announcement, right?
Does this mean these channels will end up on the XM satellites?

They know it is junk and practically nobody listens to it. They do know
that much.

There is some discussion of the [premature] DirecTV schedule changes, but my
information comes from another place.
> Does this mean these channels will end up on the XM satellites?
Some of the ones on DirecTV's schedule may not -- for example, I have no
idea whether SpecialX is going to be put back on the satellites. However,
the new channels I mentioned are going to be on the satellites.
Some may go away, as well -- this I'm less sure of.

It is a very popular genre whose fans are more devoted and much less
fickle than the more disposable kinds of music. Why do you call it
''junk''?

Perhaps it was the wrong term. "Noise" is what I meant. As in "it hurts my
ears and I'd rather listen to Top Fuel dragsters racing down my driveway".
It isn't properly classifiable as music IMO.

With an attitude like that, no wonder you need to change your name
every 6 hours.

There are great classical performers who can tolerate headbanging garbage.
Me, I just can't do it.

In most cases, the only difference between a bigot and a non-bigot is that
first one isn't afraid of expressing his feelings because of the current PC
crap.......

PC or Mac makes no difference to me. Although I'll always have a
special place for MS-DOS.

There are many, many circumstances where Microsoft will STILL tell you to
"boot to a DOS disk". Consequently, I noticed in my garage several unopened
copies of MS-DOS just today. They aren't going in the trash can just yet...

I've had industrial control processes running 24/7/365 on MS-DOS for
years without crashing.
