I've been offered a free XM radio to install in my vehicle. It's an attractive offer but I don't want to buy into an XM contract where I'll be paying for a year of service I don't need or use. I can see it'd be nice to have the XM service while traveling but I only travel outside my home area three months of the year - Feb, June and September. The rest of the time I'm at home and get good reception.
Is it possible to call XM and have them turn on my reception for, say, the month of June, then turn it off till I call again and pay for another months' service?

Yup, you can do that, but if it's inactive for more than 6 months they charge you the activation fee again to turn it back on.

Before you do anything, make sure you have a computer so you can read all the fine print. I had XM Radio for almost 4 years and decided with the econony that I could put that $64 to better use. So when what I thought was the salesman called me reminding me that my account was past due, I told him that no it wasn't, I dedided that I no longer wanted XM Radio, he thanked me and I thought that was it. Wrong, this person does not even communicate with XM Radio and nothing was done. Today I received not only another invoice from XM Radio but also a letter from a collection agency wanting the same amount. I contacted XM Radio and talked to a manager named Matthew who was very rude. He told me that in order to cancel my agreement, I have to call 30 day prior. I asked him where this is written, because I had looked all over my statement and nothing is written regarding cancellation. You are not going to believe what he told me, he told me that is written on their website and he assumes that everyone has read the whole agreement, too bad if you don't have access to a computer. He was not about to do anything and told me that if I wanted it off, I had to pay the credit collection agency in full.
