This is very illustrative of the Hoohoo mentality. O&A worked for the SAME
station and shared the SAME audience yet he attacked them as "competition."
The truth is that he knows the boys are much more talented and funny than he
is and, eventually, they would displace him.

The ---s aren't particularly funny. They're........disappointing,
actually. Sadly untalented. Desperately trying to be like Stern, so they
basically make their whole show his show. They're not particularly bright,
besides not being entertaining. They're just kind of taking up space.

What happened anyway?
I would attack anyone as competition too if they came into my backyard

Are you familiar with the phrase that history repeats itself.
This is exactly what goblin did to Imus when they were both on NBC. Goblin
was on in the afternoons and Imus of course was on in the mornings.
Goblin certainly felt that he was the heir apparent and would eventually be
the morning man when NBC got tired of paying Imus so much money.
Goblin got fired for a stupid bit just like O&A.
He went onto mornings and destroyed Imus.
And this is exactly the reason that Infinity would not allow O&A out of
their contract when they fired them.
They understood history and realized that O&A would have moved over to Clear
Channel and destroyed the goblin.
At that time goblin was in the unfunny post jackie - Flounder era and was
susceptible to any type of actually funny morning show.

Jackie was never funny. Jackie was more interesting/observational, but it
would be wrong, wrong, wrong to ever claim that Jackie was funny. Jackie
was the parallel universe version of funny. Jackie was a big black hole of
"non-funny". Jackie would inappriately laugh at stuff that wasn't funny,
making it truly awkward, embarrassing and incredibly unfunny. How Jackie
ever got on that show, I have no idea. Interesting he was (at times). To
me, Jackie was easily one of the most unfunny people I've ever heard. A
guy who desperately TRIED to be funny, but failed miserably every time.
Artie's funny. Stern's funny when he's in a funny mood. These guys are
genuinely funny. Jackie funny? As Jon Stewart would say......"Not so much."

In NYC (home base for both shows) they were on different stations at
different times (Stern in morning drive, O&A in afternoon drive).

Dear Opie and Anthony Fans:
I remember, long ago, when Opie and Anthony started out in Worcester,
Massachusetts (and we're fired because they did know when to lighten
up). They were practically clones of Howard and not so good at it
either. Then they were lucky enough to become syndicated and ended up
in Boston, among other stations, on afternoon drive. They got a little
better, but it was never about them, it was about their guests: Jay
Mohr, Little J. Norton, Jim Breuer and Frank Caliendo. By themselves,
they are boring and uninspiring.
I've attempted to listen to their show on XM and I find it going back to
the trite nonsense of their Worcester days. The show is boring. They
are not funny. They have funny guests from time to time. But that's my
opinion and I keep to myself. I don't post on your newsgroups and I
don't bother pranking them, because they don't matter. Neither do you.
If you get your jollies posting on this site, maybe you need to rethink
your existence.
I'm guessing that most of you guys don't get laid. I'm also guessing
that you couldn't fight your way out of a wet paper bag. My last guess
is that you're probably too stupid do anything meaningful either. Hence,
your sense of self is derived through meaningless posts to these
bulletin boards, that are designated for posting the Howard Stern Show.

Right, they were just lucky. It's not like they got ratings and
generated money. They were on NYC radio becuase they were a
successful show.

But they were nonetheless attacking him on air. They ripped off his act,
and then tried to rip off his audience, by ripping on him. It's not like
they were team players or looking out for the good of the station -- they
were trying to build themselves up at Howard's expense and Howard blew the
whistle on them. If I had a coworker who was running me down behind my back
to our mutual clients, goddam right I would complain to my boss. Think
about it in terms of your own life -- if the guy running the register kept
telling the customers that your french fries weren't that good, you would go
to your boss, right?
> and shared the SAME audience yet he attacked them as "competition."
They weren't interested in sharing -- they were trying to steal howard's
audience and howard knew their tactics, because he'd done the same thing to
other shows in other markets. He'd done the same thing to Imus. He knew
what they were up to because he INVENTED what they were up to -- and are
still up to.

Yeah, that's Howard, all right -- he's ALWAYS quick to acknowledge other

"stealing" Howard's audience didn't affect Howie's money or ratings.
It affected his ego...which is much worse.

The entire act is a clone of Stern's 25 year old act. Bubba is a

off copying the Stern show, but he is about 50 IQ points short.

Complete bull---- argument, and I'll tell you why. The people who
like Stern have been listening for years. The people who listen to
O&A, unless they lived in one of the 3 or 4 markets that carried them,
had no idea who they were other than the past year and a half where
they are nationally available on XM. Stern is a known quantity and
has a giant fanbase, a very small percentage of which are rejecting
him. O&A's fanbase is basically made up of people who have rejected
Stern for whatever reason. Look at how many O&A fans in here have
said things like, "I used to listen to Howard but now I listen to
O&A." People don't naturally come to the O&A show without having an
opportunity to reject Stern first. So naturally they're not going to
get the churn going from O&A to Stern like someone who's spent 20
years in the spotlight and amassed a huge fan base, a small percentage
of which were bound to become disenchanted.

No, bad business is running off the guy who makes a fortune for the
company while you only make a little bit. Don't even try to make it
sound like Howard did anything wrong. Those guys were clones,
admitted to it, then shat all over the guy who made it possible for
them to rise above playing 16 records an hour for $30,000 a year.

A lot of people have said that O&A ripped off stern's act. The only
thing anyone has been able to back that up with is that O&A have a
comedian as a regular on their show and they all talk into the mic.
People say it because stern says they ripped him off, but they cannot
offer anything to back it up.

Now, that is true. They are on at the same time and you are forced to
listen to one or the other. Plus, they are on different satellite
companies. Then, they were on different channels that could be picked
up by the same radio. And they were on at different times.

He is the self-centered egomaniac he appears to be. That is why he did

I'm going to guess that you live in or around New York. I live in the
south. We did have O&A syndicated here for a while until the --- for
Sam incident. I started listening to them because the radio station
replaced stern with them. I think that's how it went. it was a number
of years ago. Maybe Stern was on another station, I honestly do not
remember. My point is this: I was not around for o&a's start. I can
say that I enjoyed o&a from the beginning because they were fresh
voices instead of the stale crap I was used to hearing if I listened
to stern. You can disagree but that is my opinion. O&A may have been
clones in the beginning. If so, they have moved on to have their own
identity.

you don't listen to Opie and Anthony. With your habit of regurgitating the

Ever listen to talk radio before Stern? Of course not. You're too
young. I did. One guy at a mic answering phone calls. No second
person to banter with, no comedy gags, nothing but a guy and phone
calls.

Stern? None. It was one guy and the phones.

Well, there's both...the concept of having goofballs and making fun of
them, and the actual name Wack Pack. O&A fans say that Wackbag is a
different concept than the Wack pack, but why would they name anything
associated with their show something so closely resembling something
so associated with Howard? It just so happens that they stole the
concept of having goofballs on the air AND stole the name Wack___ for
a different purpose. They could have called their mail segment
anything but something with the word Wack in it. Fucking dumbasses.

Of course you can. When Dice and Howard started their feud, Howard
would call him Andrew Dice Gay. Of course, that was 10 years or more
ago, back when Dice was popular. Who knew that O&A would wait until
years later when Dice was completely washed up to turn it into a full

Using your logic, Dodge is ripping off Ford because Ford used the
internal combustion engine before Dodge. Too vague of a concept to
claim being ripped off.
As far as Andrew Dice Gay and the Homeless Shopping Spree, I cannot
find any references to stern when I search for these.
Wackbag? Fan clubs were around before stern. The name? No idea. That
name was around since I started listening.

Hey NOW!
O&A... I had XM the last year or so. Honestly I'm very dissapointed . I
used to love O&A on WNEW in NY before they were fired. But lately... They
haven't done anything funny at all. Used to love the Anthony impressions...
Used to love the prank calls and that sort of stuff. Occassionally the show
is OK... But truthfully... Howard stern is way funnier at this point. Try
listening to a few shows... Really there's no comparison... Howards much
better now. O&A needs to go back and listen to there old stuff. They were
hysterical!

If you say so. I've yet to hear one funny thing they've done, but
that's not why I wrote. Call XM and tell them you're cancelling
because you're getting Sirius instead and they'll give you a year of
XM for $3 a month, and they may even throw in a free radio.

Way to avoid the question. I'll take that as a yes. My MyFi does
neither. The original battery had a problem but replacements were sent
out. I received a replacement without having to request one.

A lot of people still say it, and it is true. They do a copy of Stern's
show. All you need to do is listen and you can see for yourself that
they do the same act Stern has been doing for 25 years.

And that's why Stern stopped being so quick-witted with the departure of
Jackie.

How do you rip off the audience of a show that airs at a completely
different time of day?

I gotta ask again: How do you steal the audience of a show that airs at

So Stern tried to stop the "comes around" part of "what goes around
comes around".

Just because someone knows that there are people more talented than they
are doesn't mean they aren't an raving egomaniac.

It's not good for business if the DJ making all the money leaves

Let me try to explain it like you are 8 years old. At some point in
history, one of the local radio stations pick up O&A. They either
replaced stern on that channel or they complimented him on another
channel. I do not remember what happened to stern after that point in
history. I do remember that the time I tried to listen to stern before
that time in history I did not find him too entertaining. When I heard
o&a, they were fresh voices instead of the stale crap I was used to
hearing if I listened to stern.

You're certainly not convincing the rest of us.

Giant and shrinking. What's the argument now - if he even brought a
million subs to Sirius? Let's say he *did*. Let's say he brought
*double* that, just for argument's sake. That's still only 1/10 of his

Well after today's announcement that Sirius is over 4 million now,
there's no question that he brought well over a million, probably
closer to 3 million. Regardless of how you want to spin the numbers,
that's well over enough to pay for himself. But yes, his hardcore
fanbase is down from what it used to be on free radio. No doubt about
it. But some are waiting for a true portable, some are waiting for
internet streaming, some just simply don't feel that they should have
to pay for it. Big deal...he's still drawn way more subs by himself
than anyone else on the market.

Are they rejecting him or the technology? Some are indeed rejecting
him. But again, name one single show that's brought more subs to
satellite than him.

'Cloned elements'--how about the whole format. First hour talk about
what you did the day before and what's going on in current events, bitch
about your latest pet peeve. Second and third hours have guests (and
ask them provocative questions) or do outrageous bits or play phony
phone calls. Last hour recap the day, and maybe do some news. This is
O&A's MO and they basically ripped it from Stern. And I guess I
wouldn't have a problem with it, if O&A and their fans weren't so hung
up with Stern. You know, they don't even compete against each other,
but you flies have a hard-on for Stern.
BTW--You'll get no argument for me on the Bubba show. I am not a fan,
and I think Howard's a hypocrite, because he was critical of the guy in
the past. I am not a fan of everything Stern does. I think the toilet
humor and some of the other ---- take away from his interviews and
observations on what's happening in the world. There were times last
fall that I was prepared to stop listening to the guy, because it became
so base and unintelligent. But I think he's rebounded a bit on Sirius.
If anything, it allows Artie to freelance more and he's a funny
motherfucker.

They were a lucky. They never owned any share of the market when they
were in Worcester (by the way the station they were on had a strong
signal and could be heard in most of Eastern Massachusetts). They had a
cultish following, but never carried #1 in their market. They were
lucky in that Mel Karmazin took a shine to them and thought they would
work. They were hardly a proven commodity. Getting on Infinity gave
them some clout and their guests became better. The show was definitely
better when they moved to Infinity. Their guests were top-notch too.
So they were able to ramp it up with resources.

Again, I am not a big fan of everything Stern does, and freely admit it.
I agree that doing the old bits was a reach. I could do without it.
I have Direct TV and get O&A free as part of their digital music
package. I've tried to listen, but it's really boring. I've downloaded
the show and same thing. It reminds me of their Worcester days in that
the entire show depends a lot on the two guys and I don't think either
is capable enough. Hell, if it were just Stern and Fred, I'd probably
be bored by that too.

Based on what Sirius' number of subs was when Stern announced the jump,
doesn't that "closer to 3 million" start to go into the unsold cars
demographic?
Seriously the "Stern's brought in close to 3 million of the 4 millikon
listeners Sirius currently has" is the biggest pile of dung I've seen in

Sirius counts unsold cars as subscriptions
Sirius signs a new car deal
Magiaclly they get over the 4 million mark.

Doesn't say much for the quailty of Sirius content or their ability to
attract non-Howie subscribers.

Rememeber his entire defense of Stern is that he spent his kids
college money on Sirius stock. 7000 shares when they were 9 bucks. He
NEEDS Howie to succeed so his kids do not end up being washed up
failures and doo wop musicians like him, in the gutter.

Mel K thinks that Howard brought in most of the subs. It's obvious
that the vast majority of the subs in the first quarter are a direct
result of Howard coming since they had over 180,000 attempted new
signups the day before Howard started. Bridge Reports credits Howard
with 65% of subs in 2005. And it's a fact that before Howard came,
Sirius didn't even have a million subs. So prove them and all that
empirical evidence wrong.

Show the numbers and the math.
As I see it in VERY rough estimates:
Before Stern Sirius had something like 750,000 subs IIRC.
Since the date Stern announced the move up to today, they've got just
over 4,000,000, leaving 3,250,000.
Mel K can say what he likes, but "most of the subs" is a bit too vague.
Bridge reports 65% of the subs in 2005 were due to Stern. I'll just go
with that and apply the 65% to everything since Stern announced.
65% of 3,250,000 = 2,112,500. A far cry from "close to 3 million".
And that's without factoring in the unsold car numbers.
