Where are the comments from Pornero? His lawyer have him on hold until

It is refreshing to read such a honest and open business strategy/
vision. Satellite radio needs more of Mel to cure the syphilis of the
PeePee Brothers and their two dozen lawsuits FTC, FCC and
bastardization of the satrad business model.

Still trying to find a way to put a positive spin on the totally inept
Howard Stern deal. Only a Siriot would buy it.

I know how you feel Frontmed, just think of where XM would be now if
the totally inept PeePee Brothers had signed Stern when they had the
first chance. Just imagine of no FTC, FCC, no lawsuits, no directors
quitting and no 60% loss of pps. Just imagine if Pornero had invested
in content instead of doodads that people return at 30% rates and OEM
deals that lose even more money on every millionth installed. Just
imagine the Sirius-like low churn rates. Oh well, you sleep with pigs
and you lose your money.

First, Mel didn't make that deal. Second, without that deal there would be
no Sirius, and XM would not currently be on their heals from the marketing
onslaught. Third, you don't seem to realize that Mel Karmazin is an
excellent radio guy, and knows his stuff.

First, I don't need anyone to tell who made what SDARS deal, thanks.
Second, you're exactly right -- Sirius was dying quickly.
Third, hiring Mel was the smartest thing Sirius has done in its history.
Fourth, the Stern deal continues to be the worst business deal in the
history of radio. The fact that Sirius was desperate for something to drag
its ass out of a sling doesn't change that. It still wrecked the company's
business model for years going forward.
But desperate times call for desperate measures.

Stern has already paid off in spades for Sirius and producing nothing
but gravy from here out while every GM install of a XM radio loses
money for XM. I wouldn't say XM is desperate, just stupid.

Plus, without Stern there, Mel Karmazin would have never gone to Sirius.

This is utter nonsense. Karmazin didn't like the Stern deal from minute one
and it has been the single biggest mess for him to clean up. And will be
for 4.5 long years to go.
Stern has self-marginalized, with Opie & Anthony now having many times more
listeners (probably 5x-10x). Stern, in simple terms (because YOU need the
simplest terms) is history.

Which is why Mel has offered publicly to extend the contrct another 5 years,
at the exact same figures and conditions as the current contract. Yep,
sounds to me as if he doesn't like the deal.

I would be surprised if right now, on the 7 markets which carry O&A, if they
have even the same anount of listeners as Howard. At the end, Howard was on
48 stations, broadcasting to about 7-8 million people. He is currently
brodcasting to about 3 million people. you are estimating that right now, on
just 7 stations, O&A are broadcasting to anywhere from 15 million to 30
million people. At his absolute height Howard possibly approached 17
million, and at the time he was on nearly double the stations as when he
ended his run. Your numbers are silly, and not even close to reality, as
there is no indication that O&A have improved on DLR's numbers by any
significant amount.

Hell, he knew damned well Stern wasn't about to do it. After making 3/4
billion for the first five years, the next five will cost 1B plus. Unless
Stern just retires (which is likely).
Precisely my point. Sirius is now locked into a 3/4 billion contract for an
asset that either increases substantially in price in 4.5 years OR goes away
altogether.
As I said, this contract sucks for Sirius and will for years to come.

We'll see how silly it is when the numbers come out. As they continue to
add markets.
If you think Stern has more listners today than O&A you're out of touch.

Xm is far from being in a "desperate" situation.
More subscribers. More revenue. Smaller loss (much smaller). Better
technology. Better OEM deals. Better content. Better infrastructure.
Less expensive content burden. Lower SACs/CPGA.
In fact, can you name one metric by which Sirius isn't in a more desperate
situation than XM?

Two come to mind.
1. Sirius reaches CFBE first
2. Sirius does not have you which is like not having OnStar taking a
$1 out of every 50 cents of revenue.

GM, worldwide, still sells more cars than Toyota. Which is in better
financial shape? Momentum is key, and Sirius has it right now. Ever since
Stern announced, XM has done virtually nothing effective in countering the
onslaught. The percentage of the market being controlled by XM isdropping
precipitously, with no end in sight.

Sirius will not reach CFBE first (by SIRI's measure, XM has already had two
quarters of CFBE); XM just didn't brag about it because the knew it wasn't
permanent.
But any CPA worth his salt will tell you that cash as a measure of financial
performance is meaningless. Both companies have done their investors a
disservice by focusing on CFBE as a metric.
In SIRI's case, they will lose about $1.2 Billion this year, nearly doubling
their own previous losses. Yet, their CEO is out bragging about CFBE.
How do you get to CFBE sooner? Pay Howard Stern with stock instead of
money. Offer money-losing "lifetime subscriptions" to get cash in the door
earlier, even at a loss.
This is not a metric Sirius leads in. But even if it did, it wouldn't be
worthy of mention (Sirius also has more Eminem channels than XM, but that's
hardly a measure of performance).
> 2. Sirius does not have you which is like not having OnStar taking a

No, Sirius has DCX. DCX, which was conveniently enticed to install
receivers by Sirius saying, "Hell, we'll pay for 'em & you can sell them for
$300 each". So, Sirius buys the receivers, DCX kicks back a years worth of
revenue for SIRI -- how convenient.
Bookkeeping tricks for the gullible. It is interesting not too many of us
who actually understand the difference between net income and cash flow are
lined up behind Sirius.

I don't disagree that XM has dropped the ball in its failure to market the
product. It is lunacy -- they have a superior product in every respect but
have allowed themselves to be cast as the second runner. I believe they're
making the appropriate changes to get their substantial lead in retail share
back.
But the reality is that XM has cornered the OEM business and until those
OEMs (Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, others) start ramping, it may not be apparent
just how big a lead XM has. I can wait.
