I have a 1st generation RCA receiver. I have checked the setting to view a 16:9 screen but nothing changes on the television. I have a widescreen TV (HDTV ready), btw. I understand the difference between HDTV and regular tv, too. What should I expect to happen when I set the 16:9 picture size from the menu?

As you know, there are different picture format for HDTV. The menu guide will be set to widescreen viewing and the schedule will be set to zoom and fill your 16:9 screen. Once you exit the menu guide, your HDTV ready TV will re-adjust according to the format you are viewing...4:3, 16:9...etc. The IRD setting for 16:9 eliminates the bars on both side of the screen while accessing the menu guide.
