Alltel Wireless announced Thursday that it had inked a deal with XM
Satellite Radio to make some of the radio company's music channels
available to its customers. Using software developed by mobile media
content provider MobiTV, Alltel subscribers will be able to listen to
streaming content from 20 of XM's more popular channels--among them are
'80s music, indie rock, country and Latin pop.

The service will cost Alltel subscribers $7.99 per month; a subscription
to XM's regular satellite radio service is not required. This is not
Alltel's first move toward making its service more media-rich. Recently,
the wireless provider entered an agreement with podcasting site Melodeo
to make podcasts searchable and streamable via Alltel's Axcess media
platform.

Alltel is a regional wireless telephone provider. Off the top of my
head, I think they are now the 5th biggest overall wireless telco in the
US, and are the largest regional wireless telco in the US.

They never heard of my region. I think Sprint and Verizon when I
think wireless.

So Alltel didn't launch a satellite radio service, they launched a cell
phone radio service...

Alltel doesn't serve anywhere here.. They have a bit of service in CT
and I think Upstate NY though. The problem is that part of their
network is still old CDMA (IS95) and some of their network is GSM
(through acquisitions). They have a lot of inconsistency as to the
technologies they're using.

Alltel is a bigger deal in the Southern and central parts of the US,
even with their acquistion of Midwest Wireless they're still not that
big of a player.

AllTell has service in AZ, and Texas as well as other areas. At one time
AllTel had service in Nevada. It sucked. It was great when Verizon bought
them out in Nevada.

In the past when I had AllTel (analog)I was out of my coverage and tried
to make a few calls. When returning home I was in AZ when my rig broke down.
AZ was in my home area. When I tried to call a towing service AllTel
operator said my service had been terminated as someone (ME) used my phone
when out of my local area and tried to use a credit card to pay for the
calls. I was on line for 10 Min. and gave up as I was on hold so long.

I had to catch a ride to the closest town that was 50 miles away to use a
pay phone. Upon my return home AllTell was trashed on my part.

I've had Alltel for many years. The cellphone service is just fine now; but
they are still years behind other cellphone companies from what I can tell
in terms of other services.

I believe they have maybe 12M customers.

They have a fair deal of swiss cheese mixed in with differing
technologies, but a roaming agreement with SprintPCS has alleviated
some of that. Unfortunately, Sprint gets one of the worst JD Power
ratings out of the major carriers and are well hated in the Northeast.
Verizon is well hated too, but liked for coverage.

Alltel claims "over 11 million" as of their last 10-Q, US Cellular has
5.7 million.

My bigger interest is in T-mobile since they have the most to gain from
the (now ongoing) AWS spectrum auction for 1700 and 2100mhz pairs.
With some billions of german money provided from DT, they have the most
to win from the auction.
