View Full Version : STB2 Boombox question after I purchased one
thelongestday320@aol.com
August 20th, 2006, 08:30 AM
A few weeks back I posted this question and thanks to those who helped
me. I did buy the STB2 Boombox at Circut City. But it didn't come
with an adapter to plug into a cigarette lighter. I have been
searching to see if this is an additional accessory. I've looked but
haven't located. Does anyone have this boombox that they plug into the
cig lighter rather than keep buying batteries? Any help again is
always appreciated.

Can I purchase a boombox and plug the receiver into it or doesn't the
starmate work for a boombox? The reason I wouldn't buy another docking
station is I could take the boombox into other rooms, right? Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.

This may be what you could use. Plug this device into cigarette lighter and
then plug
your boombox 120 volt AC cord into the adaptor. Runs your boombox normally
with no internal batteries in use.

Hey thanks a lot coyote. I'm braindead on these things and knew if I
asked someone on here I'd get an honest answer. Again thanks.

Inverter is a good idea but pretty inefficient. As far as I know, most
Sirius boomboxes are like 12V @ 3.5A draw or less. Getting a proper
cig lighter plug to the end on the boombox should work fine. Most cig
lighter ports are 10-15A, so it should work alright.
Naturally, one should check out the rating on the adapter that came
with the boombox that is used at home to make sure this is the case.

I just scanned the specs on the item.
"
Power your notebook computer through a car lighter outlet!
This 60-watt DC-to-AC plug-in power inverter converts DC battery
power from your vehicle into standard household electricity. Just plug it
into the cigarette lighter outlet and you can use the outlet to operate most
notebook computers, cell phone chargers, camcorders and other household
products that draw 60 watts or less of continuous AC power. Ideal for
campers, boaters, travelers or for emergency use. "
If the boom box draws more then 60 watts AC the device may be to
small.
When I first read the specs and noted that a notebook could be
run it seemed to me a boombox could also be run. If the BB requires more
than 60 watts the above device would be to small.

I did this in '04 with the PNP2 Boom Box. I just went to Radio Shack
and asked the sales associate to find me the right connection. Took
all of 2 minutes and now I can listen to my Sirius Boom Box in my car
and boat or anything that has a 12V cigarette lighter.

Here is a link to a site with examples of loads 12 volt devices use.

The boombox should be 3.5A * 12V = 42W or less. The PS, if I recall is
3.5A @ 12V.
However, it makes more sense to not use an inverter at all, due to
potential inteference issues, and get a direct 12V adapter from the cig
lighter to the boombox.
Inverters have their place, but high quality inverters are not usually
readily available or inexpensive. Low quality ones tend to not have any
filtering and can also introduce some nasty issues that can affect car
audio installations. There's also a fair deal of loss in DC to AC to
DC conversion.

Does the BB have a 12V power input jack? or is it restricted to 120/AC or 8
internal 1.5 volt D Cells? Where does the provided AC power get reduced to
12V. In the power cord or internal to the BB?
It the BB is equipped with a 12V input plug any 12v DC in 12V DC out
cigarette cord would work best.

In looking at the Crutchfield site it looks like the boombox will only
accept 120 V
home power or 8 internal 1.5 volt batteries. Only accessories listed are
batteries
and the Starmate Replay ST2. No 12 volt power cord is available.

As far as I know all of the Sirius boomboxes use either a wall wart or
an inline power brick with a round DC plug. Most, if not all of them,
are 12V input. I believe most of them use the same power brick and
plug too.
The only ones I may be foggy on would be the S50 exec dock and the
Starmate Replay boomcube. But I think those have internal stepdown
converters to 5V, so they still take 12V into the unit.

I wasn't suggesting that Sirius offers a 12V cable, but it's likely you
could get one made or find one pretty easy.
I'll drop an email to Taylor over at TSS Radio and see if he can tell
me what the rating is for the brick for it. As far as I know it
doesn't have an internal power supply.

Just to follow up on this, Taylor said it's the same 12V @ 3.5A that is
used on the other boomboxes. So odds are a trip to Radio Shack or an
order from Jameco, Newark, etc. could solve this.
As far as I know it's a standard 2.5mm plug, but it might pay to bring
the boombox to make sure you can find something that mates up. I
believe Radio Shack sells a multiplug 12V cig lighter thing, or they
used to anyway.

I was not aware the BB used a power brick with 12 volt output. I thought
the power cord
would be like a normal radio...120V AC. Must be my age....almost 75, Sigh

Unfortunately the days of internal power supplies has pretty much gone
out the window for a majority of electronics. The power bricks and
wall warts are cheap, reduce bulk for the product, and are easy to
change out in the field.
