I know when i purchased this 811 , no one told me about the fact i'd have to be a subscriber to get ota hdtv. I've ended my stint with dish and now It's on a shelf collecting dust....Any thoughts? I Want My HDTV....

Plug an HDTV antenna into your tv and you will get all the local ota HD signals (provided your antenna is receiving the signals). Check out antennaweb.org to see what is offered in ur area code.

I just bought a new, factory sealed, Dish 811 recceiver for OTA reception, based on the fact it was supposed to work witout subbing to dishnet. I previously had a dish setup so I connected the unit to the dish and it had no problem seeing sat 110 and 119. Loaded latest software in the process.

I also connected a UHF antenna to it and it found some HD locals ( Montreal), but everytime I fire up the unit, or try to access the OTA channels thru the channel guide, I get the same screen that says the receiver is not yet authorized by dish.

Any workaround? or it is now a doorstop?
thanks

It is my understanding that if you want local guide through dishnetwork you have to subscribe to the local channels. THey will not provide a guide for the local OTA channels for you.
