We just purchased a 60" SOny hdtv as well as switched from Bell Express Vu to Star Choice...we purchased the HD 505 receiver. The problem we are having is mostly on the HD stations...when we are watching a show that has a lot of movement or scene changes...the picture gets all grainy, discolored and the faces get all pixelated with boxes...as soon as the picture is still it seems to focus and is beautiful, but any movement and we almost can't watch it, it makes your eyes work too hard. Star Choice sent a tech over to see the problem, but of course he came during the day, when most HD programming is news or talk shows, and you just don't notice it like you do during a nascar race or CSI. ANyone else had this problem , and how did you fix it?
Thanks

Yes, I noticed the same problem on the Sony 60" HD TV at the Sony Store when they were playing "The Fast and the Furious". I believe the problem that you are seeing is one of the drawbacks of a large size sony TV.

Thanks for the comeback...but I have reason to believe it is a Star Choice problem. We can pop in a DVD, and the entire picture, all the time, is perfect...with no blurriness or pixelation. As well, all the non HD stations, don't display this problem...we have switched back from HD to the same show in non HD, and it is not happening in SD. Its almost like the HD signal is not being recieved quickly enough. I hope someone can help me...thanks

another thing you can check is to make sure that your Satellite box is displaying (output) in the same format as your TV.

For example, set your box to output to 1080i, and make sure that the TV is set to 1080i.

If they are not the same, then your box would convert the image, and the tv may convert the image again. This could cause a delay in fast-paced images.

Are you using HDMI or DVI? If you are using component, consider trying one of these connections for a faster data-transfer rate.

I have Sony's 60 Inch SXRD model, I use DirecTv as my provider(Switched over from Bell) and the picture is great all the time, the HD is just amazing. I watch shows like CSI Miami and the Law & Orders and it all looks great in HD. I think it has to be a Star Choice problem as someone else pointed out in the other post.

To by97aa....Im not sure what you mean about the settings being the same...the satellite is set to "00 00" which is native, and allows the tv to decide and not the receiver...how can I check to see if the tv has the correct setting? SOrry, Im not exactly technical! :)

 I have the same pixellation and block-noise problems with my DSR500, which is connected to a Toshiba 32HL85 LCD HDTV via a Monster DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable. I can see it on all the channels, not just the Hd ones, and it's particularly obvious in subtle color gradations such as in a blue sky where a blocky banding effect appears. Signal strength is usually around 82 and all the connections are good as far as I can tell. The cables are brand new, so that shouldn't be the problem, but I'm not sure about the firmware - system status shows the current version 00.34 and the target version 00.00. Is this correct?
I've tried changing the HDTV mode with little effect and I've left it set to native (00.00). Any tips would be much appreciated.:)

It is the compression of the digital signal that is causing the problem. Neither the TV or cabling is at fault. The greater the motion on the screen the greater the amount of motion artifacts produced in the movement area.

Best solution is for StarChoice to reduce the amount of compression in their signal (not very likely). Alternatively to increase the signal processing/decompression capabilities in the receiver.

I would recommend reducing your sharpness setting in your TV. Turn it low, or off completely. It helped on my Hitachi RPTV. Sharpness introduces edge enhancement which seem to exaggerate the problem. Your mileage may vary.

:) Thank you, Hawkmielle. I tried turning off the sharpness setting and that's helped considerably.
