View Full Version : Multi room install and moving receivers

I currently have a house that came pre-wired. Specifically I have phone and internet lines in most rooms (not relevant really) plus dual coax outlets and cabling. I currently have CATV service. The input line runs into a wiring box which has a USTEC connection block of some sort. Out of that same block runs the CATV lines to the rooms of the house. Moving a TV is a snap since each room is pre-wired. In my current setup I have a spare set of coax that is unused and there is no connection block for this set of lines.

I have a DirecTV HD installation in a few days and knowing nothing about satellite installation I am not sure what to expect. I have one HD DVR and 3 standard receivers (I only have one HD TV for now).

It would seem ideal for the DTV installer to simply plug the satellite feed into the USTEC connection block. I could then put the DTV receivers anywhere I wanted any time I wanted. No re-cabling etc.

Any ideas on whether this would work? If not what is the best option for coming close? Is the existing set of unused coax of any use? The last thing I want is for the DTV installer to show up and insist on running a set of point-to-point additional coax to the rooms I select. I really intend and desire to move some of the TVs around over time and don't want to have to re-cable.

Thanks very much for any advice on this! I have searched and can't find an answer for this situation.

your hd-DVR needs 2 coax leads and each of your other receivers needs 1 coax. Unlike cable that has one cable comeing into your home and a splitter that splits it to all the cables that run through the house. Directv coax runs can not be split with a simple splitter. Directv uses a multi switch that will need to replace the splitter that cable used. when you move a tv to another room you would need to unhook the coax that went to the old room and hook up the one for the new room. When you said that you had an extra coax that was not used, if that coax runs to the tv that you will be installing the dvr then your set. (dvr needs 2 coax cables) If not you will have to run another coax to that location.

Cool, that's good info. I don't mind at all having to manually unplug/plug if I move a TV. Just don't want to have to pull cable through a wall just to move a TV.
