An agreement signed between Comcast and Tivo in March 2005 is finally approaching reality, which will allow Comcast's 24 million cable subscribers to access Tivo's DVR software and powerful functionality on their Comcast DVR systems. Comcast currently uses Motorola and also Scientific Atlanta equipment, a Cisco owned company.

Comcast subscribers in New England, using Motorola produced DVR equipment will be the first to receive access to the new Tivo DVR systems. Comcast reportedly will continue to offer "basic" DVR service, the same as is currently offered, while also offering the Tivo loaded DVR system as a "premium service"

Subscribers in other markets using the same equipment as well as Scientific Atlanta equipment will likely soon follow suit once the kinks have been worked out.

This will mark a major milestone for Tivo, which has long been attempting to secure a toehold in the lucrative cable vision market since its inception. It will also mark a milestone as it will be the first time Tivo software will be loaded on non-Tivo produced equipment. Complexities of merging the Tivo software with the third party equipment caused delays of its rollout.

Tivo's powerful DVR and scheduling software is a favorite among a great many people who find other DVR software to pale in comparison, often finding it slow and primitive as well as lacking many Tivo exclusive features.

Tivo has also signed similar agreements with Cox Communications in August 2006, however it is not yet available.
